10 new cafes you need to know about: Part 2 (2014)

Since our last feature on new cafes (which sent you all into a cafe hopping frenzy!), there’s been a fresh batch of openings with the number of new cafes popping up showing no signs of slowing down. In this round up, there are two definite trends. The first: cake, cake, cake! as we see more bakery-cum-cafes and the second: cafes start to pop up in the not-so-usual places. Time to make your way through our round up of 10 new cafes to check out here:

BOAT QUAY

1. Cat Cafe Neko no Niwa

Yes everyone has been raving about it – Singapore’s first cat cafe and if you don’t know what we’re talking about, then you must live under a rock! Inspired by the famed cat cafes of Japan, this is your chance to meet, mingle and snuggle with cats (over coffee and cake) who could really do with some of your affection, having once been homeless and abandoned. The purrrrrfect place to unwind and indulgence in some cat therapy! See our full review of Neko no Niwa here.

Cat Cafe Neko no Niwa is located at 54A Boat Quay, Singapore, 049843. Opening hours are Monday – Friday: 11am – 10pm. Saturday and PH: 10am – 10pm. Sunday: 2pm to 9pm. For more information see their Facebook page here.

2. Madame Patisserie

A decidedly girly high-tea cafe (hence the name!) and relatively new addition to the Boat Quay scene (what?! a high-tea cafe in Boat Quay? Yes!!!) serving freshly baked in-house cakes and pastries. The feminine blush pink interior gives the game away, and being a short hop skip and a jump away from the CBD makes it a good spot to sneak off to for a cheeky elevenses and gossip with the office girls. Look out for the affordable High Tea Sets!

Madame Patisserie is located at 76 Boat Quay, Singapore, 049864. Opening hours are Monday – Saturday: 8am – 11pm & Sunday: 8am – 8pm. For more information see their website here.

OUTRAM PARK

3. The Audacious Cakery

This diminutive spot is all about touting delectable confections, from cupcakes and seriously orgasmic fondant cakes in unique flavours, to pastries and savoury items. What The Audacious Cakery lacks in size, it sure as hell makes up for in flavour and happy factor. With offerings made daily on site to maintain quality and freshness, and only a limited quantity of each product produced each day, you know what you’re getting is going to be bang on the money. Choco-holics be sure to order the Chocolate Obsession..it’s massively drool-worthy! See our review of The Audacious Cakery here.

The Audacious Cakery is located at Blk 2 Everton Park #01-61, Singapore, 081002. Opening hours are Monday – Saturday: 10am – 7pm. For more information see their website here.

4. Ronin

If you haven’t yet checked out the latest offerings from the good folks behind The Plain and The Bravery..uh…where have you been? Oozing hipster cool with a sound track to match, a laid back vibe, and Melbournian inspired cafe fare and java, we might be so bold as to say this China Town endeavour is their best yet! P.S. we love their scrambled eggs!

Ronin is located at 17 Hong Kong Street, Singapore, 059660. Opening hours are Tuesday – Sunday: 8am – 8pm. Closed Monday.

THE WEST

5. Stirling Highway

A “nouveau-indie” hangout offering a simple, handcrafted and flavour-inspired menu with fresh, wholesome ingredients inspired by cafe hopping, winery road trips, BBQ parties in Oz back in the day. If you love good food at reasonable prices with genuinely friendly service then Stirling Highway will deliver on all three. Plus three words: Pulled Pork Pancakes (on the brunch menu). Yes please!

Stirling Highway is located at 5 Ridgewood Close, Unit G1, Ridgewood Condominium, Singapore, 276696. Opening hours are Monday & Wednesday – Friday: 11am – 9pm. Saturday – Sunday: 9am – 9pm. For more information see their website here.

TIONG BAHRU

7. ButterScotch Cafe

A great option for those looking for a Halal certified cafe, ButterScotch is a marriage of many passions, an insatiable sweet tooth and the love for coffee. The folks here are obsessed over desserts accompanied by great coffee. With a philosophy built on the notion that good desserts must be aesthetically appealing and exciting; by the looks of their Zesty Caramel Mousse Cake and Double Caramel Drizzle Cake we reckon they are doing a stellar job of living up to it!

ButterScotch Cafe is located at Blk 164 Bukit Merah Central, 01-3625, Singapore, 150164. Opening hours are Tuesday – Sunday: 8.30am – 10pm.

HOUGANG

9. Hatter Street

Desserts lead the way once more in this cosy little cafe and bakehouse nestled in the heartlands. A hidden and unexpected gem which describes itself as a cafe and bakehouse with “A Pinch of Madness”. NOVENA/BALESTIER

10. Wheelers Yard

For a totally different cafe experience, hot foot it to Wheeler’s Yard. Located in an ultra hip warehouse space in a unit in an industrial park, this place screams Brooklyn, NYC. What makes it different? The fact that its primary purpose is to sell hipster bicycles (think sitting at a long communal table with hipster bikes for company). OK so the cafe offerings here probably take a bit of a backseat (excuse the pun!) – in our opinion it’s more about the unique cafe setting and all those hipster hotties you’ll be rubbing shoulders with!

Wheelers Yard is located at 28 Lor Ampas, Singapore 328781. Opening hours are Monday – Saturday : 11am – 8pm. Sunday 9am – 8pm. For more information see their Facebook page here.
