Come throw the windows wide open and enjoy the view of our latest online exhibition.

When the four walls close in it’s time to find a window into another world. One where love, sweet love is not just for some but for everyone. We’re inviting you to immerse yourself in spectacular colours, layers of wonder and prisms of light right where you are. Join us for an online exhibition exploring the energetic work of Australian abstract expressionist, Lara Scolari.

Lara’s latest body of work, Vim Vitae captures the life force that bubbles and bursts invisibly all around us, and burns just as brightly in our body and minds even as we sit still; especially as we sit still. Celebrating our creative energy, Lara’s paintings are a reminder that renewal is a constant available to all of us. Her signature organic motifs are conjured into shape with rope and other natural materials and rendered in swirls of ink up to 40 layers deep.

The effect is like looking into the deep through crystal clear waters – we can’t change the nature of things but we can shift our perception and evolve. “I create landscapes of life force,” explains Lara. “I’m tapping into vibrations and responding to the moment,” which can be felt in the dynamic brushstrokes and shapes that echo something bubbling under the surface.

“What gives me the greatest joy is seeing the effect that the paintings have on a viewer. The energy of my work prompts a dialogue that continues between the artwork and the person observing it, long after I’ve finished. And each time they look at it, it seems to change, like the quality of stained glass,” says Lara. We invite you to see for yourself. In a time when it’s easy to doubt, Lara reminds us of the richness of our scenery and interior spaces. Her bold use of colour, depth of layers and energetic movement encourage us to give reverence and gratitude, rather than wallow in scarcity. Her paintings feel like a celebration; an uplifting of the ordinary that allows us to see beauty in the every day.

Missing the bustling streets of the city? As Singapore eases into recovery from the circuit breaker, the National Arts Council (NAC) brings the streets back to life with the best of arts and culture, literally. Through Streets of Hope, NAC bands together with 153 homegrown artists to take #SGCultureAnywhere, as their unique works line Singapore’s streets along St Andrew’s Road, Fullerton Road, Esplanade Drive, Stamford Road, and many more. The full Streets of Hope collection will also be made available online on the NAC Facebook page from 4 June for Singaporeans to easily access and enjoy the art works from wherever they are.

This is the first and one of the largest presentations by our Singaporean artists, raised high on street banners to lift spirits, and for all to appreciate the creativity of our nation. This integrated project commissioned by NAC brings together the visual arts community in full force, joining hands with artists across generations, backgrounds and mediums. Look out for works by the likes of Milenko Prvacki, Heman Chong, Ezzam Rahman, and Zul Othman (ZERO) as we present creations ranging from Chinese calligraphy to digital print, performance art and even batik painting. Those at home can also explore these works up-close and get to know Singapore’s visual artists as the full Streets of Hope collection will be available on Gillman Barracks website by end of June. Be warned – you probably won’t be able to choose a favourite.

Addicted Art Gallery is proud to present a new series of provocative work by the Skye Brothers.

The first thing you need to know is: colour. All paintings in the series are rendered in black, white and gold, but every painting is different. Examining the duality of life (black and white), and the role of the divine (gold), the Skye Brothers take a penetrating look at the stories we tell ourselves, and the truth that lies beneath them, through their unwavering monochromatic and metallic lens. Masterfully executed in layers that are added to or revealed, their paintings are beckoning us to explore what’s being covered up and what’s hiding in plain sight.

The Skye Brothers are as sweet as they are shocking. Made up of pop culture disruptors slash part-time poets, brothers Liam and Noah are here to make us choose what matters. And they’ll just keep on encouraging us to choose right until their dying breath so you may as well listen: “It’s not that we need a wake-up call, it’s about noticing what we’re waking up to. The world is in chaos for people everyday, but in every moment we stand on it there is the capacity for heaven on earth.”

All at once, their artworks are giving us a good shaking while we’re being stroked, to see what will make us sit up and take notice. But there’s no message to share. The Skye Brothers want us to generate our own. “We’re not here to give you meaning. As soon as you give something a definition you’re side-tracked; you’re missing everything else. Sometimes it’s not about taking things too seriously and just being right now. The simplest things are the purest. That’s divine.”

Like the devices used in a Brechtian play, the almost invisible phrases buried in the canvas as matte paint plays against gloss, or the starkly handwritten statements that proclaim themselves in the artwork, the audience is being distracted with titles and labels so they don’t dive too deep in their emotional response. Instead, they’re being invited to practice some reflective detachment; a more constructive mind-set from which to gather the intel on our souls and make changes we need.

Noah and Liam work in a symbiosis that makes their work alive, even when it’s finished and hanging on a wall. Working in unspoken union, they complete work energetically, moving around and responding to what each other has created on the canvas, practicing the detachment required in knowing that someone might paint over what you’ve created. And that it might be a little bit – not better or worse, just different – for it. “The continuous process of destruction and creation that we undertake – you just learn to let go. The beauty is in the flow.”

The battle between the light and dark side of the Force is upon us! STAR WARS fans, prepare to choose your side and join the Force in Southeast Asia’s first ever STAR WARS Virtual Run. Registration is now open and participants can clock-in their run distance from 15 June. This year also marks the 40th Anniversary of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and runners will receive a commemorative Finisher Trophy upon completion of the virtual run. Limited edition merchandise will also be available for purchase.

In collaboration with LIV3LY, Southeast Asia’s leading Social Fitness App, the STAR WARS Virtual Run is open to fans and runners from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Runners can pledge their allegiance to the light or dark side and fight in the galaxy’s most epic virtual run on treadmills or any running path they choose.

Runners can opt to run solo in the 5.4km (Individual) or pair up with a friend in the 40km (Individual or Group of Two) where the distances can be completed all at once or over a period of time. Runners will have to complete the distance by 30 September in order to be eligible for the Finisher Trophies. 40km finishers will receive an additional The Empire Strikes Back 40th Anniversary Trophy. Registration can be done through the MOVE by LIV3LY app (available on the App Store and Google Play). Participants will have to activate the MOVE Run Tracker in the app before they are able to record their distances from 15 June to 30 September.

Many people are recording their experience of the COVID-19 pandemic to make sense of things, retain sanity, and remember. This series of 3 workshop sessions aims to give writers the tools to capture the deeper experience behind our current circumstances –– not just what we do (or don’t, or can’t) but to explore our interior experiences and the meanings we create from them. Sessions will focus on responding to writing prompts, sharing writing, and giving and receiving feedback on work from fellow participants and the facilitator.

Please note that attending this workshop series will require all participants to be visible to the facilitator and fellow participants through their web cameras.

Session 1: Light Within [Fri, 3 July 5pm–7 pm]
In this unprecedented time, what has inspired us? Ignited our resilience? Prompted us to be more adaptable, kinder, more compassionate? Do we see humanity, society, differently now? How do we see ourselves? Have we evolved or changed?

Session 2: The Unexpected [Sat, 4 July 11 am–1 pm]
The experience of the circuit breaker holds many firsts for all of us. Introverts who have prized alone time may have been surprised to find themselves missing spontaneous human interactions. What have we learned about humanity and ourselves –– which we never expected?

Session 3: Dealing with Our ‘Dark’ Emotions [Sun, 5 July 11 am–1 pm]
Anger, resentment, irritation, frustration. What are some of our uncomfortable emotions and reactions that have emerged in response towards circumstances, towards others’ behaviours in society, towards people we encounter or live with? Writing prompts invite participants to delve into these experiences and allow themselves to acknowledge complex emotional reaction, as a means of processing them and growing in understanding and compassion for themselves, while crafting them into documentary micro-narratives.

Melissa De Silva is the author of “Others” is Not a Race, about Eurasians in Singapore. It was awarded the 2018 Singapore Literature Prize in the creative non-fiction category. Her fiction has been published in Best New Singaporean Short Stories: Volume Three, Quarterly Literary Review Singapore and LONTAR: The Journal of Southeast Asian Speculative Fiction.

As part of the gallery’s summer presentation, Cuturi Gallery is pleased to present a group exhibition showcasing an eclectic mix of artists, whose artistic practices span mixed media, sculpture and painting. Featured artists comprise Romain Bernini, Hubert Le Gall, Liu Ling, Gioele Amaro, Aisha Rosli, Darryl Westly, Gaël Davrinche, Tianbing Li, Delphine Rama, Lionel Sabatté and Odelia Tang.

The exhibition centres on presenting new works alongside previously exhibited works, in a bid to proffer fresh and alternative ways of seeing. Works that will be shown for the first time in the gallery space include Time is a Weight I Carry (2019) by Singaporean artist Odelia Tang, a mixed media work exploring the bodily presence in relation to the passage of time. In addition to Selfstanding Selfie (2020) by Italian artist Gioele Amaro embracing a digital reconsideration toward the traditional medium of painting, and Space Shuttle (2020) by Belgian artist Delphine Rama drawing inspiration from the convergence of fashion and architecture. Through this collective presentation, The Summer Show looks to revisit existing forms of interpretations and encourage new modes of contemplation surrounding the works on display.

The Summer Show will be on view at Cuturi Gallery from 9 Jul – 2 Aug 2020 at #02-16 Pacific Plaza, 9 Scotts Road, Singapore 228210. Admission is free.

ABLE is a social service agency that serves persons with disabilities and their family caregivers. In recent months since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak, donations received by ABLE have reduced significantly. In light of this situation, ABLE is excited to host an inclusive fundraising mobility session on Zoom, together with Founder of The Moving Body, Audrey D’Cotta.

In this interactive session, Audrey will expertly lead us through a 45-minute set of breathing and mobility exercises that you can do anywhere and anytime. In celebration of our resilient ABLE community, Audrey will be joined on screen by ABLE’s client-ambassador and stroke survivor, Madam Soh.

With tickets going at $20 each, the sales proceeds and donations will help ABLE continue supporting persons with disabilities and their caregivers.
