10 Questions with The Voodoo Sound, rock band

We’re not shy about the fact that we just love to bang the drum loud and proud for local artists and musicians over at City Nomads, and so with their new EP just released at last month’s Culture Clash Festival, what better time to introduce you to The Voodoo Sound. A local, 10-piece strong rock band known for creating and performing music that is fast, loud and crazy with guitars, electronics and a hell of a lot of drums blending elements of funk, metal and traditional ethnic rhythms into a tight concoction of intense, experiential music. Hell yeah!

These award-winning folks hail from a deep spectrum of musical backgrounds, from orchestrally-trained heavy-metal musicians to funk masters with a penchant for the exotic who have unleashed their brand of magnetic, crowd rocking voodoo at festivals, competitions, street shows and stage performances.

Currently, The Voodoo Sound is hard at work in the studio rehearsing for their upcoming EP promo shows (check out the promo video here) and writing new material for the album they are planning to release in 2015.  In the midst of the madness, we had a chat with the Voodoo who do what you don’t dare do people:

1. Tell us about what you do…

Create systematic noise that forms an artistry of immense experiential journey through a human mind above all the goofiness that resembles the brotherhood of a band that enjoys the simple taste of pulled tea and nonsensical mind boggling humour. On second thought, not really. It’s actually more like – we invade the personal spaces of one another, eat, laugh a lot. Sometimes all at once. And play music.

2. What do you enjoy most about what you do?

The musical moments of epiphanies and unexpected results in the studio, being on natural high from the explosive energy sharing our music with a live audience, and the calm after an adrenaline fuelled show. All of which drive the motivation of why we do what we do.

3. What inspired you to make music together?

Friendship, and the desire to create something really good together.

4. Where do you get your inspiration from?

Long walks. Life and its nuances. Progressive rock music. Rage Against the Machine. Coldplay. Sometimes Behemoth. And probably 10 other music genres on the spectrum.

5. What were you doing the last time you looked at a clock and realized you had lost all track of time?

This occurs more than it should. During rehearsals, while working on original music, getting lost in the world of YouTube…

6. What’s your life theme song?

We have more than one being 10 of us! Wait It Out by Imogen Heap, Chop Suey by System of a Down, Pharrell’s Happy, Africa by Toto, All These Things That I Have Done from The Killers, Leave the World Behind by Lune, Bach’s Cello Suite No.1… Also, we like the ones from Pokemon and Power Rangers. Yup.

7. If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you want with you?

Wow, this is almost impossible to answer. With 10 in the band, we pretty much want everything – a spanking new aeroplane with the comforts of a commercial flight and the technical functions for war, a house with full service for our loved ones by the water where our cruise ship is docked, and a special den for The Voodoo Sound designed with specifications from our (very long) hospitality rider.

8. If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?

We would like to have powers of the X-Men, beloved Steve Irwin, and other psychic abilities rolled into one, please.

9. How lucky are you and why?

Lucky to be alive, present and living. Lucky to have options, blessings to count, and the support of family and friends in our music making.

10. If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?

Just do it, never give up, and buffer meeting times with at least 30 minutes before the actual hour if you have 10 or more members in the band.

The Voodoo Sound will be playing at Hood Bar on 10th May 2014. To find out more about The Voodoo Sound including this and upcoming shows Like their Facebook page here. To order a copy of their EP (physical format) drop them a message at their Facebook page (digital format available from 11th May).
