5 Free Things to do this SG50 Weekend

With a slew of exciting SG50 dinners and parties planned across the board for this year’s jubilee celebrations, there’s definitely something for everyone to do this National Day. To save you guys a financial headache, we’ve prepped a list of free things you can during the SG50 weekend to commemorate our nation’s independence.

Carnival and Concert at Singapore Botanic Gardens

NParks’ SG50 Concert Series in the Park sees a massive festival staged at the Singapore Botanic Gardens during the National Day weekend. The newly inducted UNESCO World Heritage Site will see an array of activities, including concerts and free outdoor movie screenings. Homegrown talents such as Rui En, Taufik Batisah, T’ang Quartet, The Sam Willows, and Corrinne May will be performing over the course of three days, while the public can also indulge in local delights such as laksa, nasi lemak, and satay at the carnival side of things.

Picnic at Marina Barrage

Can’t get enough of Singapore’s beautiful coastline? Grab those picnic mats and head down to Marina Barrage, as an SG50 extravaganza takes over the stylish dam. Highlights include an aerial display by The Republic of Singapore Air Force Black Knights, old-school games for a sense of nostalgia, and roving entertainers such as magician and caricaturists. Lazy to pack your own picnic basket? Snacks, drinks and picnic baskets will be available for purchase at the event, with all proceeds going to charity!

Carnival and Concert at Singapore Sports Hub

Architecturally-stunning and a modern symbol of our city, the Singapore Sports Hub is an ideal venue to celebrate our nation’s independence. During the National Day weekend, the mammoth sporting complex will host a two-day carnival, with events like sports try-outs, movie screenings, and stage games available to the public. All carnival activities are free, but you can also attend an SG50 concert for $20, with the stellar line-up of artistes including Stefanie Sun, JJ Lin, and Dick Lee.

Museum Open Houses

Go museum hopping this weekend with free admission to all museums and institutions under the National Heritage Board (NHB). Classic movies like the Sound of Music and Doctor Zhivago will be screened for the public at the National Museum of Singapore, while other highlights include the Peranakan Museum’s Great Peranakans, Fifty Remarkable Lives exhibition. Other museums under the NHB include the Asian Civilizations Museum, Singapore Philatelic Museum, Reflections of Bukit Chandu, and Our Museum at Taman Jurong.

It’s inevitable. The start of every public holidays sees a rise in the number of people binge-eating in delight. To counter this, National movement ActiveSG will be holding a SG50 Jubilee Weekend special in a treat for all fitness buffs with free entry to all gyms and swimming pools across the island, making sure that’ll you still be fitting in your pants come next week.
