5 Things To Do In Singapore This Week: 25th to 31st March 2019

Send March off with a sweet farewell by immersing in all things French at the annual Francophonie Festival, or attending a cool new art exhibition about planes … and envelopes. Speaking of planes, how about a ‘trip’ to Japan with Propeller Bar’s inaugural wanderlust party?

PLANES & ENVELOPES Exhibition

There’s always something cool at the UltraSuperNew Gallery, and this time it’s PLANES AND ENVELOPES. This art exhibition by artists Ginette Chittick and Hazel Lim employs the use of objects such as kapok yarn and semi-translucent paper to create woven artworks that highlight the intersections of contemporary art, design, and craft. These are simple, but very versatile materials, and now they’ve fashioned them through intricate patterning to create beautiful large-scale art that you shouldn’t miss.

From now to 14 April 2019 at UltraSuperNew Gallery. Admission is free. See the event page here for more details.

Francophonie Festival 2019

Alliance Française is once again teaming up with the embassies of France, Belgium, Canada, and Switzerland to bring you the best of French-speaking culture, from directors to artists, comedians, and more. The festival runs all the way to April, but this particular week sees a mixed bag of events including a screening of the Golden Globe-nominated Belgian film Girl (2018), a talk on cultural differences between the French and Singaporeans, and a storytelling session with famed French author Antoine Guilloppé.

Celebrate Francophonie from now to 30 April 2019 at Alliance Française de Singapour. Tickets are required for selected programming. See the event page here for more details.

The Wanderlust Party 1st Edition: Japan

The sky-high Propeller Bar — you know, the one overlooking the Harbourfront precinct — is launching its inaugural Wanderlust Party series this Friday. The first stop? Grand old Japan with three hours of free-flow Meiji Shines cocktails (from its new Wonders of Propeller menu), premium sakes, Roku Gin, highballs, and Kirin beer. And that’s only the drinks. Munch on sashimi, wagyu beef (carved live in front of you), mentaiko pasta, and crispy karaage to the beat of your favourite tracks, courtesy of DJ Stephen Day.

Take a boozy trip to ‘Japan’ on 29 & 30 March 2019 at Propeller Bar, 7pm to 10pm daily. Tickets are priced from $108, available here. See the event page here for more details.

Invasion with Mendy Indigo & Jeevan Leroy

Kilo Lounge’s popular Invasion series reboots with a fresh lineup of DJs gracing their decks. From the region comes Mendy Indigo, a resident DJ at Bangkok’s up-and-coming club Beam and one of the city’s biggest names in techno. She’s no stranger to this side of Asia though, having hosted monthly Girls Got Groove parties at Kuala Lumpur’s Elysium. Alongside her comes Singapore-based Jeevan Leroy, who has a few tricks up his sleeves to keep you coming back for more — especially when we’re talking minimal dark room beats.

Party with Mendy Indigo and Jeevan Leroy on Saturday, 30 March 2019 at Kilo Lounge, 10pm to 4am. Cover charge is $20 after midnight. See the event page here for more details.
