We might be inching closer to SG50, but the carousing, concerts, and all-round consumption continues, as always. This week, we look forward to a legendary guitarist, secret movie screenings, pool parties, and a little dash of poetry.
Speakeasy #21
Divya Victor and Shivram Gopinath
Speakeasy features both established local poets and up-and-coming wordsmiths in a series of poetry events held in the intimate space of Artistry Café. This week’s edition features Divya Victor – author of Natural Subjects, UNSUB, Things To Do With Your Mouth, and other books – and Shivram Gopinath, a member of the Party Action People, a rolling spoken word troupe. The latter is a regular in the Singapore poetry slam scene and has performed regularly at Singapore Writer’s Festival, Singapore Heritage Festival, and the Lit Up Festival.
The event will take place on 29 July from 8pm onwards at Artistry. For more information, please see Facebook.
Substation Secret Screenings #1
The Substation Secret Screenings highlight recently-released international films that will be screened in Singapore for the first time. If you’re wondering where the ‘secret’ bit comes in; well, the movie won’t be revealed until the screening itself. Expect a groundbreaking film that pushes genres and has generated discussion on the global film festival circuit. You can also ponder over the clues to what the film will be on the event’s Facebook page.
Johnny Marr Live In Singapore
Best known for his guitar work with legendary English band The Smiths, Johnny Marr’s solo achievements following the band’s breakup suggest that this light certainly hasn’t gone out. A critically lauded Top-10 album with The Messenger, taking the fourth spot in a BBC’s recent ‘Greatest Guitarist’ poll, and sold-out shows are proof of that. Expect to hear a sprinkling of Smiths favourites like ‘How Soon Is Now’ and ‘Still Ill’ alongside Marr’s more recent work, particularly from his latest solo effort ‘Playland’.
Johnny Marr will be performing live on Thursday, 30 July at 8 pm at The University Cultural Centre (UCC) Hall, NUS. Purchase tickets here.
Koskos Hour
A rollicking Friday night CBD party? Yes, please. Koskos Hour was conceptualised as a way for frazzled office workers to skip the Friday evening traffic rush and just de-stress exactly where they were. Forget the unlikely setting and head over to Hong Leong Building on Friday for an evening of gourmet food, artisanal drinks, live DJ sets by weelikeme and Mr. Has, ping pong, darts, as well as grooming services by local luxury barbershop Sultans of Shave.
Koskos Hour will take place at Koskos, B1-34 in The Hong Leong Building, 16 Raffles Quay, Singapore 048581. For more information, click here.
