5 Things To Do This Week In Singapore: 19th to 25th February 2018

After the festivities of Valentine’s Day and Chinese New Year last week, it’s time to slow down and enjoy the artsy week ahead. From Broadway musicals and world music to poetry slams and underground clubs, there is really something for everyone this week.

The Luna/tic Poetry Slam

In light of all that’s happened this month – the blood moon, Valentine’s Day, and Chinese New Year – the upcoming Poetry Slam at Blu Jaz Cafe invites poets to share original work revolving around the lunar lunacy. With each slammer reciting three poems up to three minutes per title, we guessing there’s going to be a lot of content and food for thought! Those interested in taking part, it’ll be good to know that the two best poets earn cash prizes of $50 and $25 – simply sign up on the Facebook page or go for the three-minute open mic.

Hear the wannabes and the true poets on 22 February 2018, 8pm-10.30pm, at Blu Jaz Café, 11 Bali Lane, Singapore 189848. There’s an entry fee of $10 and students get 10% off food and beverage.

Evita

A legendary collaboration between Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, Evita revolves around the life and death of Argentinean political leader Eva Perón. Although she was second wife of the country’s former President Juan Perón, she was well loved by the poor and the working class for her work in labour rights, healthcare, and women’s suffrage. Theatre lovers will also find hits like “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina”, “On This Night of a Thousand Stars”, and “You Must Love Me” accompanying the gripping story.

The original Broadway and West End production under the direction of Hal Prince will be running from 23 February – 18 March 2018, at the MasterCard Theatres of Marina Bay Sands. Tickets start from $55 and are available here.

Under The Bridge Featuring The Freestylers (UK)

Happening at a secret city centre location, attendees can expect a party with indoor festival feels and a sci-fi theme, full fluro UV décor (definitely dress to glow), and a more eclectic mix of music such as drum and bass, breaks, electro, jungle, and psychedelic trance – with veteran bass music makers The Freestylers (UK) headlining. Under the Bridge is also a non-profit event; all revenue from the admission fees and drinks will be split between local charities and the local visual artists and musicians.

Under the Bridge is happening 24 February 2018, 9pm-6am. Tickets are priced at $40 and are available here.

Power Reggae

Featuring two of the greatest reggae bands in Singapore, Power Reggae returns for the third year to celebrate the growing reggae scene here in Singapore. Having successfully toured Vietnam and Indonesia alongside singers like Denny FrustReggae Remedy is one of the quickest rising and anticipated performances. Alongside the Singa Ragga tribe with band members Ahn, Dzan, Fareeq, Nas, Azmi, Akym and Amali, they will show you the real Rastafari vibes! In addition, the cool selector Baba from Big Up Soundsystem will be closing the night off.
