5 Things To Do This Week in Singapore: 27th June to 3rd July 2016

It’s the last week of the iconic Geylang Serai bazaar, so head down soon if you haven’t had the chance. Also going on this week is Joan Cornella’s first solo exhibition in Singapore, the Singapore Theatre Festival, a small wine fair, and the second edition of Silent Disco Asia.

Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar 2016

Each fasting month of Ramadan, the streets around Geylang Serai come alive in a dazzling display of lights and food in the largest pasar malam (night market) you’ve ever seen. From greasy Ramly burgers and coney dogs to hipster street food like salted egg yolk churros and cotton candy sodas by a younger generation of vendors, you’re in for a big treat. Of course, with any Hari Raya festive market, the main stars are classic traditional dishes from long-time stalls, such as dendeng, lamb jerky, kerepok lekors and perhaps some goreng pisang. Bring cash!

Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar 2016 is running daily until 6 July 2016 along the stretch of Changi Rd between Joo Chiat Rd and Paya Lebar Rd, from 5pm till late.

JOAN CORNELLÀ: A Solo Exhibition

Do you remember those humorously gory and disturbing comic strips circulating all over social media? Yes, the one with wordless bright-coloured six-panel pages. If you’re a fan, you’ll be glad to hear that the Spanish cartoonist behind it all, Joan Cornella, will be holding an exclusive exhibition in Singapore, brought to you by Symmetry Entertainment. Get upclose and personal with the man himself along with his unique works and art on canvas, and you can even purchase originals, limited edition illustrations, t-shirts, books, and more.

Joan Cornellà: A Solo Exhibition is happening from 24 June to 3 July 2016 at Far Out! Admission is pay-as-you-wish. For more details, check out the event page here.

Singapore Theatre Festival 2016

Back this week is the Singapore Theatre Festival, featuring nine playwrights, eight directors, and four companies. With LASALLE College of the Arts being the main hub this year, the festival will not only feature re-worked productions of recently staged plays – Rodney Oliveiro’s Geylang, Johnny Jon Jon’s Hawa and Alfian Saat’s Geng Rebut Cabinet  but also shine the spotlight on brand-new plays by debuting playwrights, such as Helmi Yusof’s My Mother Buys Condoms, Nessa Anwar’s Riders Know When It’s Gonna Rain and also Thomas Lim’s Grandmother Tongue. Also, look forward to a series of forums, a festival club, and also a playwriting workshop.

Singapore Theatre Festival 2016 is happening from 30 June to 24 July 2016 at various locations around Singapore. For more details, please click here.
