5 Things To Do This Week in Singapore: 30 October to 5 November 2017

Had a good Halloween weekend? Once your heart has settled down from all the scares and booze (or some freaky combination of the two), launch into some literary insights at the Singapore Writers Festival, party with La Mamie’s from Paris, immerse in a day of all things Mexican, and feast on a gargantuan sky-high brunch at one of Singapore’s highest destinations.

Singapore Writers Festival 2017

Much anticipated on the local cultural calendar is of course, the Singapore Writers Festival, which will bring down the world’s major literary talents down to Singapore. Celebrating the written word in not just English, but also Malay, Chinese, and Tamil, look forward to panel discussions, workshops, lectures, and performances by the likes of Jay Asher (the man behind Thirteen Reasons Why), Sophia Jansson of the famous Moonmins comics, and X-Men writer Marjorie Liu, as well as a slew of over 240 locally-based authors.

Singapore Writers Festival is running from 3 to 12 November 2017 at various locations around the island. For more details on events and programming, check out the official website here.

Kampong x Collective Minds: La Mamie’s All Night Long

La Mamie’s is one of Paris’s coolest DJ crews, and they’re here this Friday to show us a crazy good time. First launched in 2007 by a group of six friends sharing the same passion for vinyl, they’ve worked their way up from throwing events in a disused home in Montrouge before playing several bars and clubs and then setting up the Macki Music Festival with buddies from Cracki Records. In partnership with veterans Kampong and Collective Minds, you can bet this is going to be an unabashedly no-holds-barred party!

La Mamie’s All Night Long is happening on Friday, 3 November 2017 at Golden X The Great Escape from 8pm – 3am. Tickets are priced at $15 (early bird) and $25 (advanced), available here. For more details, check out the event page here.

Dia De Muertos – The Mexican Day of the Dead

What do Frida Kahlo, Mariachi, Frida Kahlo, tacos, and tequila all have in common? If your guess is that they’re all Mexican, you’re absolutely right. This Saturday, experience one of Mexico’s key cultural festivals, Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead), as it comes to life at the iconic, colonial-styled old Beach Road Police Station. There will be traditional music, food, art, movie screenings, craft workshops, and also installations inspired by painter Frida Kahlo. In other words: a whole lot of fun.

Dia De Muertos is happening on Saturday, 4 November 2017 at 99 Beach Road from 1pm – 11pm. For more details, check out the event page here.

Starker Music Carnival 2017

If you haven’t already realised, Starker Music is the next big thing in Singapore’s music scene. And making a bigger and bolder comeback is the annual Starker Music Carnival Carnival with local musicians and bands such as The Facade, Disco Hue, Jasmine Sokko, Lingkai, and Alfred Sim taking the stage. Fan of Mandopop? The pop diva A-Lin will be making an appearance as well, not forgetting awesome grub by Starker Bistro and obviously, great beer.

Starker Music Carnival is happening on Saturday, 4 November 2017 at Starker Singapore (Wallich Street), from 3.30pm – 10.30pm. F&B sets are priced from $25, while a free-flow beer package goes for $158, available here.

CÉ LA VI Brings Back Sky High Brunch Party

Also making a highly-anticipated return, for its fifth edition no less, is CÉ LA VI‘s Sky High Brunch. Think boozy debauchery and some summer-loving with free-flow Veuve Clicquot Yellow NV and bottomless amounts of modern Asian delights by Executive Chef Joey Sergentakis, including creations like Red Curry Braised Sea Bream and Tea-Smoked Free Range Chicken. There are also oysters galore, a live carving station boasting some Rangers Valley Ribeye, plus a spectacular dedicated DIY ‘Bloody Maria’ booth that lets you create your own version of the classic.

Love to party? CÉ LA VI’s resident DJs will helm the deck with scintillating tunes against the picturesque view of the Singapore skyline.
