The fastest-selling production in the Young Vic’s history, Tennessee Williams’ timeless masterpiece receives a ferocious makeover by iconoclastic director Benedict Andrews, and an all-star cast featuring Gillian Anderson (The X-Files, The Fall) as Blanche DuBois, Ben Foster (Lone Survivor, Kill Your Darlings) as Stanley and Vanessa Kirby (BBC’s Great Expectations, Three Sisters at the Young Vic) as Stella.
This heart-wrenching tale, set in present day New Orleans and against a backdrop of rock music featuring songs by Chris Isaak and Jimi Hendrix, follows the downward spiral of southern belle Blanche DuBois as she travels from Mississippi to seek solace with her sister. Anderson’s DuBois is as emotionally raw and intense as she is tragically haunting, matched against the explosive and violent nature of her brother-in-law, played by Foster.
A Streetcar Named Desire is on Friday, 1 May at the Esplanade Theatre.
