A Tapestry of Sacred Music: Soweto Gospel Choir

Lauded as one of the most exciting groups to emerge in world music in recent years, two-time Grammy and Emmy Award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir’s exuberant blend of rich earthy rhythms, glorious harmonies and a cappella numbers has taken the world by storm.

Formed in 2002, the choir is known for their impressive repertoire of songs that meld African gospel, traditional hymns, Jamaican reggae, Soul, American pop, and spiritually themed secular songs. Since their runaway hit debut, Voices from Heaven (2005), they have performed and recorded with Bono, Queen, Annie Lennox, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dionne Warwick, and Celine Dion.

About A Tapestry of Sacred Music:

A Tapestry of Sacred Music invites you to seek fulfilment through paths illuminated by the sounds and voices of devotion. Immerse in sacred music from around the world as well as from different religious communities within our shores at this festival, and be moved by the beauty of these spiritually inspired traditions. Be it through the grandeur of the Concert Hall or the intimacy of an outdoor performance on the Courtyard lawn, soul-stirring encounters can be experienced throughout the centre.

The Soweto Gospel Choir is performing live on Thursday, 16 April at 8pm at the Esplanade Theatre.
