When I cast my mind over to Dempsey Village, I can probably count on one hand the places I think are worth the visit. Although Dempsey is a bit of a Singapore institution, it doesn’t exactly fill me with the greatest of excitement. But when newly opened Bécasse, which heralds from Sydney and is bound for global domination, opened its second outlet there (the first being at ION), it was enough to tempt me down to the leafy enclave.
Bécasse has an easy, breezy, bistro feel about it, making it the perfect spot for a laid back brunch or catch up with the girls – and the menu, which is French and European inspired, is geared accordingly. On the brunch front, an absolute must order are the Sticky Date Pancakes ($13). Light and almost cake-like in texture and delivering on naughty toffee flavour, these are the perfect cross between a pancake and sticky date pudding. For a calorific double whammy, order up with an Instagram-worthy Salted Caramel and Toffee Popcorn Macaron Milkshake ($8) and you’ll probably need to go on a juice cleanse after!
For those who lean more towards the savoury, the Pulled Chicken Crepe ($16) is a surprisingly light and fresh tasting option, although a little more Gruyere wouldn’t go amiss.
For lunch and dinner bites, sharing is the name of the game. The King Crab Rillettes ($15) are a subtle and creamy alternative to its ubiquitous duck cousin and cheese fans will delight in ploughing through a roulade of Homemade Boursin Cheese ($12) where the combination of compressed fruit and nut bellinis, beetroot and the cheese make this seemingly simple dish surprisingly more-ish.
It would be rude not to take advantage of the seafood bar and when juicy Seared Scallops ($22) are paired with foie gras foam and broad bean puree, it makes for a rather rich and luxe pairing that you probably wouldn’t want to devour all by yourself.
When its time to order dessert, we recommend eye-ing up the patisserie counter and taking your pick – which should include the biscuity Salted Caramel & Chocolate Tart ($4.90) and the Chocolate Jaffa Mousse ($6.90) which is like a fantastically smooth Terry’s chocolate orange in taste. Don’t leave without picking up a loaf of bread to take home (the bakers have been up since 2am working hard on them!) – specifically the Sourdough which is made with an impressive level of obsession over 3 days and proof is in the finished product!
Bécasse is a welcome addition to the Dempsey dining scene. Offering laid back classiness, solid casual dining options and prices that are refreshingly competitive for the area, it looks set to be Dempsey’s new go-to for some European-inspired cafe culture.
