Welcome to Bar Stories, home of the bespoke bevy, where you order drinks based on flavours you like rather than the combinations you know. To me this is simple genius, since ‘what do you feel like eating?’ or ‘what do you feel like drinking?’ aren’t uncommon questions in the home now, are they? POOF! The menus are gone! So if you’re after beer or wine then you better go somewhere else. All that’s left is you, a bar well stocked with deliciously fresh ingredients, a bar tender who knows his stuff and communication.
Bar Stories has practically become a household name in the cocktail bar world, but if you haven’t experienced the magic of having exactly what your palate demands poured into a jam jar and served to you with a sprig of basil, then here’s what you’ve been missing..
This little bar gets packed, but if there’s a space be sure to sit bar-side and watch the artistic mastery unfold in front of your eyes. Nothing is pre-made here and whilst they use regular spirits, they only use fresh, high quality ingredients so your tipple of mystery magic may take a moment to arrive, but believe us it’s worth the wait. Plus not to forget all enviable glassware! Here’s an example of how it works..
We ordered something ‘gingery and earthy’ and were gifted this orangey, smooth, creamy armchair classic of bourbon and bitters- served in a martini glass with a garnish of dehydrated orange and a sprig of shrubbery. If it had a name, this one would be called Orange Herb Garden.
Next we went for something with ‘dark fruits and a fresh flavour’ and they put together a grape based, Gin concoction – a lot like a Bramble, served with a lit lime. This one would be Flaming Vineyard.
A ‘sour, short cocktail’ request was met with a lime-green, sea-foam-esque, zesty, sour combination in my favourite kind of glass. A lot like a whisky sour, but made with gin. Maybe this one would be a Citrus Tide.
If you ask for something ‘creamy and toffee-like’ you will literally get that. This one is made up of ice cream, baileys, vodka and coco-powder. It’s a dessert in a cup, sickly sweet but heavy on the booze. This should be Dessert Cup.
A ‘sweet, refreshing drink’ came in the form of a light flavoured, vodka and yellow watermelon based mixture in a jam jar. This one is something I’d like to sip by the side of a pool and we’ll call it Jungle Freshener.
Following the girly-ness of the last cocktail we decided to opt for something a bit more sturdy and a whisky based, short, gingery drink rounded the evening off nicely. Perhaps this one would be Sturdy Sherlock.
With all cocktails priced between $20++ and $25++ they are not only crafted to meet your requirements, but more affordable than some of the newer cocktail bars popping up around town. For a drink you really want to drink head up to Bar Stories, for cocktails just how you want them.
