But is the book better? : Oscar Buzz

The Academy Awards or Oscars, one of the most highly anticipated film awards in Hollywood, is right around the corner with its 86th instalment. As the best films of 2013 duke it out on 2 March, we take a look at 10 of the most recent winners for Best Adapted Screenplay in this bumper series. It is awarded to the writer of a screenplay adapted from another source, often novels, plays or short stories, but sometimes a television show or even another film.

About the Oscars

The Academy Awards are presented annually, honouring the highest achievements in filmmaking. First held in 1929 during a private dinner banquet, it is one of the most eminent and definitive accolades given to films today, and broadcast internationally in over 200 countries. Colloquially known as the Oscars, the origins of the nickname are unclear. One commonly cited story gives credit to then Academy librarian and eventual executive director, Margaret Herrick, who is said to have remarked that the trophy resembled her Uncle Oscar. Regardless of how it started, the moniker stuck, and the Academy Awards officially adopted the nickname in 1939.
