City Nomads Radio started by putting the spotlight on Singapore-based DJs; but with us growing regionally, we’ve decided to use this platform to support the DJ community in Asia. Thus in this edition, we cast our attention on Sunju Hargun, a Bangkok-based DJ, and spoke about his music, his passion project, and his upcoming plans.
Sunju Hargun has been at the front lines of the Asia’s underground scene since the beginning. He’s spent the last 13 years establishing himself in Bangkok,Thailand, helping spots like Glow Nightclub and Grease develop into the city’s go-to underground spots with his residencies and club nights.
While the dance music industry continues to grow in Asia, so does the number of festivals – 2016 saw Sunju sharing stages with international acts like Seth Troxler, Jamie Jones, Richie Hawtin, Loco Dice, Dubfire, and many more.
Hi Sunju, how would you describe your music?
Hello, City Nomads! I would describe my sound as being very technologic, techno advanced, but also retaining a sort of punk ethic. I think what I try to represent is freedom, freedom of expression through sound. It’s very open to incorporating different elements, to representing my true identity as an artist, coming from a left field alternative perspective. I would say it’s very alternative left field underground punk perspective.
You’ve recently started a passion project with a group of friends in Bangkok, Karma Klique. Tell us more about it?
Karma Klique is a project that I’m very proud to be a part of, alongside with friends who live in Bangkok. The vision is to share the positivity we find in music
and use it to create tangible benefits for those in less fortunate circumstances. The first and very successful project we had hosted was a boat party, the result was magical as we reached our goals and targets to raise money for the foundation we were working with. Our teams passion and energy with this project is united by a common desire to achieve positive change.
Is this passion project going regional?
The projects are currently focused on Thailand at present but with a view to take our vision into the wider region in the near future.
You’ve been traveling a lot for the music gigs. What’s next?
2016 has been a real exciting rollercoaster so far, A true blessing to making debut appearances in countries i have never visited before. On the international front, I’ll be heading to Barcelona, Bali, Manila, Singapore, India, Berlin, and more that are in the planning stages, including two to three festivals. On the local side of things, I’m currently running a monthly event concept at Glow called “Inhale” and I also make a monthly appearance at Bangkok’s new “Beam”. On top of all that, I’m really excited to announce I’m also currently in the midst of planning my first live/visual show which all will be revealed sometime next month in June.
Tell us about the curated mixtape you’ve put together.
This one is quite special actually as i would call it a bundle of memories captured from my recent gigs and projected into this mix.
