It’s no secret that the Arab Quarter is one of our favourite neighbourhoods to hang out in, and now there’s yet another reason – Symmetry.
Nestled in a quiet corner of Jalan Kubor and feeling more like a Sydney-side than Kampong Glam-side eatery, the minute you walk in you’re welcomed by an atmosphere which is chilled yet warm all at the same time. This cafe cum restaurant-bar serves up modern European cuisine with an Australian twist, accompanied by friendly service.
This month, we’ve visited Symmetry twice, and so what you read here is the culmination of our two encounters. The first, a snappy mid-week lunch, so we bee-lined it straight to the mains. We loved the Linguine ($24), and the unique combination of crab, hazelnut and pesto which it deployed. Very tasty and satisfying indeed.
The Sea bass ($28), while pleasing on the palate married with charred peppers, olives, fennel and smoked tomato was a little on the small size for our liking, amp up the portion of Sea bass and we’d be a lot more enamoured by this dish.
These were wolfed down with a side of Hickory Corn ($8), smothered in BBQ sauce typical of the U.S. deep south…
and a fabulously fresh and delicious Lychee Mint concoction. As tempted as we were to sample some of the rather fine looking cocktails on the menu, sense got the better of us this particular lunch time.
If you’re looking for a new brunch spot, as we were on our second visit, then it’s definitely worth checking Symmetry out, partly because the atmosphere lends itself so well to a laid back, cheerful brunch.
But also because, well, how can you say no to The Big Breakfast ($24), which really is one heck of a big breakfast which comes with the absolute works.
We also liked that the brunch menu includes a starters section, handy if like one of us Nomads that day, you’d already eaten too much by the time you got there and just want something light to nibble on. We highly recommend the Green Pea Soup ($12) which darn it, is one of the best, and most comforting we’d had in a long time. Loved the cute presentation too!
Do note that if you’re planning on heading over for weekend brunch, be sure to make a reservation so as not to be disappointed as these guys get pretty busy.
So if you’re looking for a new spot with a chilled vibe, good food and happy service which promises that each time you walk in, you will walk out feeling happier; then this is the place for you, where you might just find some inner symmetry.
