First Look: Singapore Night Festival 2018 Night Lights

Is it that time of the year again? Where magical lights appear seemingly out of nowhere around the Bras Basah.Bugis district? Without us realising, we’re already thrust into the irresistible allure of the Singapore Night Festival. Here’s a first look at the famous cultural event in the local arts calendar, which runs till 25 August 2018. Bring on the Night!

Ember Rain by Starlight Alchemy

Pedalling on a bicycle has never looked so gorgeous. Created by Singapore’s premier multi-disciplinary group Starlight Alchemy, generate a mesmerising downpour of orange embers in this interactive fire sculpture , representing catalysts of ideation and innovation. Incidentally, the tower’s lotus-shaped petals symbolise rebirth, purity, and beauty.

Orbit by LiteWerkz x 3M

Orbit comes in collaboration with young design collective LiteWerkz and global science company 3M. Awarded as part of the Singapore Night Festival Open Call, this installations lets you step into an immersive experience inspired by the vast solar system and the unexplored space beyond. By spinning the orbiting planets with your own hands, watch as they slowly lift you from reality.

The Leap of Faith By Teng Kai Wei

Teng Kai Wei is an artist specialising in conceptual landmark sculptures made by creatively manipulating materials. The Leap of Faith is an attempt to reflect the importance of taking every little step and growing stronger from difficult situations to draw closer to our dreams.

World of WearableArt™

You might recognise this renowned international design competition, which attracts hundreds of entries from over 40 countries annually. World of WearableArt™ is a seamless amalgamation of fashion and art featuring designers such as Grace Duval, Frank Strunk III, Yangjingting Chen, Xi Zhang, and Galina Mihaleva.

Odyssey By Arnaud Pottier & Thimothée Mironneau

Expected to be the most popular installation in the festival line-up, the iconic projection at the Singapore Art Museum is a staple at every edition. This time, French artists Arnaud Pottier and Timothée Mironneau seeks to offer an immersive journey through time and space with Odyssey, from an infinitely massive cosmic scale to an infinitely small atomic level through relativity of speed, gravity, and exploration of light.

The Search by The Search Party

The Search uses the symbolism of a paper plane – a fond childhood plaything – to pay homage to the journey of navigating life in the city. Accompanied by a surreal soundscape by Singapore-based pianist Eric Chiryoku, this installation is also supported by Paper Carpenter, a design studio specialising in 100% recyclable cardboard creations. The Search Party is an artistic collective derived from students of the Singapore University of Technology and Design.
