While ‘prohibition style’ bars and cocktails are definitely having a bit of a moment in Sing, there’s one that got there before the rest. How could anyone dispute it’s place as the original, with a name like Speakeasy?
Some of you may know Speakeasy from its time when it was nestled up in a shophouse on the corner of Blair Road, but earlier this year it became a little less hush-hush when it moved down to it’s new home on Tanjong Pagar Road. But it’s still a well kept secret….perhaps until now!
Stepping off the main drag is like stepping into another world…an intimate, vintage-inspired interior awaits complete with old-time piano – the perfect setting to sip on cocktails from the prohibition era.
As well as a fancy new home, Speakeasy also has some new tricks up its sleeve. The trump card? It’s recently launched Tea Cup Cocktail Collection, which makes me think of Chaim Potok’s quote – “Come, let us have some tea and continue to talk about happy things”. Because there’s something very happy about pouring a tea-based cocktail out of a fine china tea pot, into a lovely little tea cup, and I’m pretty sure it will lead you to talk about happy things!
The collection consists of four carefully thought out and cheekily named cocktails priced at $15 per cup or $45 per pot, of which we will start with the Mo-Tea-Toe. Sounds familiar? That’s because it’s a spin on an old favourite – the Mojito! Made with fresh mint tea infused with brown sugar syrup, Cachaca and lime, this is a fresh, light, perfectly balanced and very grown up Mojito-inspired drink if ever there was one.
For those needing something a bit more “ohmmmm”, the Spirituali-Tea should help you achieve a bit of zen, thanks to its blend of chamomile-infused honey, vodka and lime while the Full-mon-Tea, which I like to think is a cheeky play on a full breakfast because of course as well as tea, and eh-herm gin, this one is made with egg white, which makes for a super smooth, beautifully light concoction.
While the three above were all very light and therefore far too dangerously drinkable (add that to the fact that you’re drinking it out of a tea cup and…uh oh!), the Festivi-Tea has a little bit more depth to it because it uses whisky as its base. Couple that with Christmas tea infused flavours of berries, cinnamon and cloves and the result is a warming, more robust flavour, with hints of all those chai spice flavours I love so well.
With its latest introduction, Speakeasy has shown the ever-evolving cocktail landscape in Singapore that it’s still got game. If you fancy yourself a little tea party of the naughty kind, then pop on down, order a pot with three or four friends and get involved with some of their bite size snacks against the backdrop of some live music (Wednesday – Friday from 7.30pm).
