“Greetings to you, the lucky finder of this Golden Ticket, from Mr Willy Wonka! I shake you warmly by the hand! Tremendous things are in store for you! Many wonderful surprises await you! For now, I do invite you to come to my factory and be my guest for one whole day – you and all others who are lucky enough to find my Golden Tickets. I, Willy Wonka…’
Ah yes, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. Most of us grew up with Charlie’s tale, which only left us (sadly) pining for edible grass, candy trees, chocolate waterfalls in Willy Wonka’s candy paradise. It was almost cruel to be introduced to such a perfect yet unreachable fantasy.
Guess what. Not anymore. And no Golden Tickets are needed – thanks to a Spanish genius and mad hatter, it’s going to be a reality this August. This first-of-its-kind wonderland event in the entire world has chosen our little island to be its launching point – something perhaps not surprising given the amount of attention and importance gastronomy is for us Singaporeans.
What can one expect?
Eight themed pavilions of life-sized animals made from sugar and chocolate, a massive edible wall and confectionary architectural wonders, 1:1 animals made out of chocolate and sugar standing proud beneath clouds of spun sugar and a giant pastry moon, a chocolate stage where visitors can enjoy chocolate on tap and take part in chocolate body painting…and an attempt for the World’s Tallest Chocolate Fountain – an 8.6 metre-tall Callebaut Falls.
It’s not just a visual feast either, for each visitor is entitled to 12 different sweet and savoury treats, including Escriba’s famous Chocolate Red Lips, Crema Catalana, croissants with an assortment of fillings, that come at the combined value of $50. These confectionary treats, prepared with quality Spanish ingredients and imported over here, will be served by theatrical talents from Spain.
That’s not all.
One can’t deny that the Spanish know how to party way better than the rest of the world – type ‘Ibiza’ in Google, and the first suggested phrase is ‘Ibiza Party’.
It hardly comes as a surprise then, that Fantasia by Escriba is more than just a bright, happy fantasy. Once the sun sets, the wonderland will change an adults-only late-night show with two of Ibiza’s best DJs, go-go dancers and Singapore’s best bartenders for Midnight @ Fantasia.
Perhaps now one can understand why Steve Aoki chose to have his birthday cake done by world-renowned pastry power couple, Christian Escribà and Patricia Schmidt – an exploding one, no less.
Fantasia @ Escriba is a place of many strange and wonderful things. At its heart, it is both an edible and visual buffet of quality European pastries combined with theatrical entertainment, conjured up by our modern Willy Wonka (who appreciates sensuality and adult fun); a crazy mad hatter of confectionary creations.
