I’m feeling rather smug as I write this. Why? You may ask. The reason: The discovery of a rather fine spa located in…a warehouse-style building a stone’s throw away from Geylang no less! On arrival at g.Spa you might be a little baffled. From the outside, you will probably be wondering whether you’re even in the right spot for some pampering. Indeed the complex where g.Spa is, was the former Badminton Hall which was famous in the 60s for regional top matches and has now been gazetted as part of a drive to revive and preserve old buildings. On entering however, it all becomes very clear indeed, as you enter another and quite wonderfully indulgent, low-lit tropical garden-inspired-world. Welcome to the world of g.Spa.
How can this be? A $3.5m renovation of the huge space has resulted in a lush multi-sensorial escape and it’s pretty impressive as what seems to be Singapore‘s largest indoor spa. With a seemingly endless list of amenities including 23 treatment rooms which sprawl over two levels and two separate areas – one for the ladies and one for the gents; various hydrotherapy services including a Turkish-inspired Hammam and jacuzzis and the chance to get massaged in a bath by 96 jets, wet massage rooms; manicure and pedicure rooms; relaxation rooms where you can get your feet rubbed while you watch your personal TV in recliner chairs, private couple rooms, VIP rooms, a forest-inspired cafe…the list is nigh on endless!
Feeling beaten and totally worn out by the hectic pace of every day life, we checked out g.Spa’s Romantic Escape package in the run up to Valentine’s Day for some serious R & R with “the other half”. Compared to many other couples packages out there where sometimes the prices can make you wish there was only one of you, the pricing is seriously competitive at $288 nett (worth $464) for both of you. There’s not much you would get for a couple at that price at many of the big name spas in Singapore, not much at all.
On arrival, expect to be whisked off to a private VIP room and welcomed by Valentine’s themed juices and light fruit bites – a nice touch. If you’re feeling peckish before your treatments, you’ll be very happy for the free flow of mainly local eats as we were – snacking on dim sum before sneaking off to your couple room with your very own personal jacuzzi filled with bubbles. What more could you want? Well how about a 60 minute Gateway to Vitality Massage in the seclusion of your own couple room which we can promise you will leave every single ache and pain banished from your body.
All that pampering is clearly hard work, so by then it will be time to get back to the tranquil dining area to do justice to the free food and drink, which is mainly local flavours. Something we just love! because the last thing you want after a day at the spa is to be hit with a big bill for all the food and drink you’ve ordered (no choice – you’re hungry!). Once you’ve refuelled, the package includes full use of the spa facilities for additional lounging – so that’s hours worth of chilling out in the hot and cold pools, steam and sauna rooms and relaxation lounges so you can really while away the whole day until you’re ready to roll home.
However if you’re not keen on taking a package, the a-la-carte prices are also quite reasonable – $84 (non-member) for general admission for use of facilities and free flow food and drinks, and $105 (non-member) for a 60 minute signature massage; or general admission plus signature massage for $148, as an example.
Maybe it’s being immersed in all that sensuous low lighting, but we left feeling so relaxed at the end of it all that we almost couldn’t remember our names! We also love the fact that the spa is open until late meaning you can really get the most from your day, and simply just float home once it’s time feeling all relaxed, revitalized and reconnected with the Mister or Mrs.
The Romantic Escape at g.Spa is available for the month of February 2014. Appointments are required. Please call 6280 8988 or email booking@gspa.com.sg.
