Hotel Review: Enchanting & Memorable Celebrations At Shangri-La, Singapore

The first luxury hotel in Singapore, Shangri-La Singapore, stands as a trailblazing icon of elegance and continues to raise the bar for Asian warmth and hospitality. More than its opulent ambience and lush surroundings, we got to experience first-hand their top-notch hospitality coupled with pleasant surprises celebrating a birthday at the hotel.

Although it’s just a stone’s throw away from the hustle and bustle of Orchard Road, arriving at Shangri-La Singapore is a refreshing step into a verdant urban oasis. This time, we arrived a little more excited as we readied ourselves for an enthralling and memorable time with Shangri-La’s new Enchanting Celebrations package. Here’s everything you need to know:

Right from check-in, we experienced the hotel’s thoughtful hospitality. From checking our dietary restrictions before offering snacks to my child, to patiently guiding us to our Horizon Club Junior Suite, the luxury hotel made things even more convenient with WhatsApp – Through a chat initiated by the hotel’s customer service, we could send our requests simply via text messages instead of having to dial in on the phone.

Bubbles and Balloons

Entering the well-stocked room, we were greeted with a bottle of Prosecco, a huge bouquet, and a generous Charcuterie board complete with dried fruits, nuts, and crackers, which definitely set the tone for the celebration. To top it off, pink, gold, and polka-dotted balloons adorned the bedroom ceiling, along with golden balloons screaming “Happy Birthday” on the bed (words are customisable, by the way).  And if you think that’s all, they’ve even prepared a birthday cake. Because no birthday is complete without a cake, this certainly put us in the mood for a joyous celebration.

Raising our glasses, we toasted to being one year older (and wiser), to good health and abundance, as we savoured the delectable cheese and cured meat platter, together with the drinks from the mini-bar (yep, all included in the package!)

The Room

Our Horizon Club Junior Suite room sat at the corner of the 20th floor. The 67 sqm room has a living room area connected to the dining area, flanked by a kitchenette. The bedroom, with hidden sliding doors for privacy, comfortably fits a large working desk, a king-sized bed, and a vanity table by the side. After all, this is Shangri-La; of course, so the rooms are bound to be elegantly furnished and comfortable. If we had to suggest a minor change to the hotel team, it would be that we would’ve preferred more fluffier pillows to rest our heads for the night instead.

The thing that took us by surprise was the impeccable view from our room. The alcoves in the living and study areas were fitted with floor-to-ceiling windows and boasted a panoramic view that blew us away. We could see as far as Pinnacle@Duxton, and we spent a good amount of time lounging by the alcove, basking in the sweeping views of the area.

The hotel’s thoughtfulness came through again with the room’s amenities. Beyond the usual shower gel and shampoo, we found alcohol-free makeup remover tissues! Let’s face it: we do forget stuff from time to time, and this was a nice touch. The “care pack” also came with a L’occitane hand cream, hair band, and an eye mask to block out the light, all packed in a lovely red pouch.

Facilities & Amenities

The celebration package includes access to the Horizon Club Lounge on the 24th floor. On top of breakfast, the club serves light refreshments and drinks throughout the day and runs an evening cocktail and canapes program from 5 pm to 7 pm. Like a mini buffet spread – think cheese, salad, fruits, small bites, and a live noodle station – this could make up an entire meal. We especially loved the Laksa for its rich coconut gravy and cockles and the soft and tasty chwee kueh.

During the day, we recommend taking a dip in the pool or strolling around the landscaped gardens. Gym enthusiasts will be glad to know that Health Club is very well-equipped, and you can even have a go at the steam and sauna room or the indoor hot whirlpool bath. Not leaving the little ones out, buds by Shangri-La runs engaging programs within their interactive play space that’ll keep the younglings happy and busy for hours.

For us, we opted for a revitalising facial treatment at Chi, The Spa, enjoying 25% off with the celebration package. The HOMMAGE™ Gentlemen’s Facial specifically addresses men’s skincare needs, while the Vitamin C Facial brightens our face and offers protection against the damaging effects of free radicals. The gentle hands of the therapists lulled us to sleep, and we woke up to beautiful, glowing skin.

If you are a sleeper like us, you’ll know how disconcerting it is to wake up and immediately leave after a relaxing treatment. Here, the tranquil  relaxation lounge with snacks, and drinks lets us wind down before treatment and adjust ourselves afterwards so we can transition smoothly into the day.
