It’s Taco time at Hombre Cantina

Dios mio, the Mexican wave continues to sweep across Singapore, this time washing up on the shores of Boat Quay in the form of Hombre Cantina, a simple taqueria and burrito stop which also doubles up as a casual bar specialising in Mexican drinks.

Ordering is a very simple process. Line up, choose your food, pick the meats, fillings, load up the salsas, and hey presto! The whole process takes under 5 minutes so if you are in a hurry or just want to stuff your face before a heavy night of drinking, this is perfect. It’s ‘fast’ food…except it actually looks and tastes good.

Opting for a selection of tacos with mixed fillings and a massive Chicken Burrito, we began to devour. Definite winners were the Fish and Beef Taco, although I am always partial to a chunky, tasty burrito. There’s just something so satisfying about biting into a massive chunk of tortilla stuffed with rice, beans, avocado, cheese, meat and salsa. Just so yummy!

Be sure to load up on the chilli sauce as well. No burrito or taco is complete without the picante chilli pepper flavour. In fact it makes it, in my opinion.

After my relatively recent conversion to becoming a more frequent tequila and mezcal drinker, it was a site to behold, inspecting the walls of Hombre, which probably has the best selection of tequila and mezcal you will find in Singapore under one roof. From Tapatio to Ocho, Corralejo to Sombra, Del Maguey to Ilegal. An awesome collection, and prices that are not to bad at all.

Sticking with tradition however, I ordered a Margarita made with Corralejo tequila which was a delicious, and refreshing accompaniment to the tacos and burrito. A perfect sweet-sour partner in crime to the chilli peppers dancing around my mouth.

Boat Quay seems to be getting better and better all the time, and the addition of Hombre Cantina is a welcome site. With most items ringing in at around $15 a pop, I know where I’ll be devouring my next late-night burrito after a night out at neighbouring Spiffy Dapper and Ah Sam’s.

Hombre Cantina is located at 53 Boat Quay, Singapore 049842.
