Join the Food Revolution (Day)!

Food glorious food! Yes we all love it, but how often do you stop to think about what you’re putting inside you, where it came from, or how it was prepared? Yes, we are a nation of consumers, but cooks? Well that’s something that we’re working on!

Cue Food Revolution Day, a global initiative by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver which is also happening right here in Singapore on Friday 17th May. What’s it all about then? Raising awareness about the importance of good food for everyone by focusing on three simple actions – cook it, share it, live it. And let’s face it, if someone says “Good food”, you know us…we’re there in a flash!

In this fast paced, madcap world, we’ve become a wee bit guilty of being lazy when it comes to food…and that’s particularly the case in Singapore – oh land of eating out. Yes many of us will be embarrassed to admit that we lack even the most basic cooking skills. Eek! But fear not. Food Revolution Day is here to empower us to develop better cooking skills, and inspire us to cook fresh food from scratch. And just in the knick of time!

Being the uber foodies we are, this was definitely something we wanted to get behind and shout from the rooftops because what’s not to love about great, fresh food – make that great, fresh food that you’ve taken the trouble to prepare yourself…well that makes for a very happy Nomad indeed.

So what can you do to join in on Food Revolution Day? Read on and find out….

Attend an event

There are two public events being organised in Singapore for Food Revolution Day including a Movie Night where you can watch the inspiring “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead” (watch the trailer here) in the inviting atmosphere of the Living Cafe while eating a delicious and healthy menu created by their chefs. For more information and to buy tickets see here. The Living Cafe will also be hosting a special Food Revolution lunch, complete with healthy food demo. For tickets and booking see here.

Revolutionize yourself!

Being a very much grassroots movement, the onus here is getting your butt into gear and doing something of your own accord. Here are some ideas of what you can do:

1) Get cooking! Cook something from scratch using seasonal produce and/or try a new ingredient. Need some inspiration? Check out this link here to download some recipes.

2) Organise a movie night dinner and invite some friends over. It could be something as simple as downloading the Food Revolution Day basic pizza recipe here and then providing lots of different toppings for your buddies to make their own. Simple, fun and interactive!

3) Host a potluck party for friends and/or family and rally the troops to bring over their favourite home cooked dish.Task them with bringing over starters, mains, sides or desserts so you end up with a lovely balanced meal. Ah there’s nothing like a good old pot luck is there!

4) If you’re feeling a little more confident, how about trying to recreate a restaurant dish you really enjoyed at home?

5) We are blessed in Singapore with some fantastic wet markets – so get out to them to reconnect with the sights, smells and textures of real fruit and vegetables, and bring some produce back home to start cooking with.

6) If you’re guilty of always popping out on your lunch break for your usual fast food fix, shake things up and impress your work colleagues by bringing a home made lunch to work instead.
