In this week’s Just Opened’s round up of new restaurants, cafes and bars in Singapore we have food with heart, food with Greek soul, a spot of heritage, and a hipster cafe so underground hip it doesn’t even have a Facebook page…what craziness is this?!!!
Crossings Cafe
This, we simply love! Crossings Café is a new opening with a difference because rather than catering to the hip crowd and trying to be the coolest and shiniest, they have a rather profound purpose and we urge you all to get behind it. This cafe serves food, drink and opportunity. At this social enterprise cafe; not only are profits being channelled to charitable causes, the cafe itself is staffed by youths from disadvantaged backgrounds who will learn essential skills to secure a bright future in the F&B industry. Crossings is currently collaborating with Assumption Pathway School, a Catholic vocational institute, to take on interns and graduates from the school to work in all roles at the café, from the servers to the trainee chefs. Savour their delicious comfort food and the fact that your food is served with heart and hope.
Crossings Cafe is located at 01-01 55 Waterloo Street. Opening hours are Monday – Sunday: 10am – 10pm. For more information see their Facebook page here.
The Mustard Incident
When you fancy a hotdog..where springs to mind? Really the only place we can think of is the cinema …and that’s just a bit grim. Well fret no more hotdog lovers because The Mustard Incident at Tangs food hall is the latest addition to the ‘dirty-but-good-food’ trend that is sweeping Singapore and their irresistible gourmet-style hot dogs should definitely have you satisfied. These are inspired by the grilled Chicago style, rather than the boiled New York style, and the toppings and condiments sound rather scrumptious! Take the The Frankenstein – a freaky fusion of beef and pork sausage wrapped in bacon and slathered with black pepper and sweet onions. Mmmmmmmmmmm.
The Mustard Incident is located at Tangs Orchard Basement One, 310 Orchard Rd., 6836-3647. Opening hours are Monday — Thursday and Saturday: 10.30am — 9.30pm. Friday: 10.30am — 11pm and Sun 11am — 8.30pm. For more info check out their Facebook page here.
Morsi & Sorsi
Morsi & Sorsi which translates into “Sips and Bites” is the latest addition to the China Square Food Centre, serving a small menu of traditional Italian street food and home-style fare. The eatery is run by a young dynamic team trained at Gattopardo and at the helm is Chef Lino Sauro’s whose efforts at Gattopardo have made it a go-to for lovers of his honest Sicilian flavours. We’re most excited by the presence of Arancini ($6) on the menu, which for those of you not familiar, are deep-fried risotto balls, all cheesy and delicious…drools. If you’re looking for a quick, casual bite but don’t want to scrimp on quality ingredients and punchy flavours, we recommend you give Morsi & Sorsi a try.
Mykonos on the Bay
You know how much we love Greek food, but until now Blu Kouzina has had a monopoly on our Greek taste-buds….well, enter Gladiator number 2! Mykonos on the Bay, a new addition to the awesome selection of eateries at the Quayside, Sentosa Cove. Modelled after a genuine taverna, with an actual sea view- so you could pretend you were in Greece – the menu is just what you would expect, hot and cold mezze, classic Greek salads laden with feta, and traditional charcoal-grilled meats. We hope that in true the Greek style, portions are huge and plentiful too! This is one we can’t wait to try.
Mykonos on the Bay is located at 31 Ocean Way, Quayside Isle #01-10. Opening hours are Monday, Wednesday & Thursday: 6 -11pm, Friday: midday – 2pm, 6 – 11pm, Saturday -Sunday: 11am-11pm. For more info check out their website here.
Bincho
Japanese dining concept Bincho is the latest hip dining space from those folks behind Esquina. Transformed from a 70-year-old traditional coffee shop, Bincho showcases elements of the past, present and future through the old skool mee pok stall, traditional coffee & toast, Kopitian-style marble tables, and charming old blue square tiles which contrast nicely with the modern open-concept yakitori bar and cocktail bar featuring progressive and playful Japeritifs by Stefan Ravalli of The Library. Bincho is a fantastic example of how local heritage can be preserved while introducing new dining concepts – we hope that the patrons of the original Hua Bee Mee Pok stall- a firm favourite among older residents don’t mind sharing their space with a bunch of hipsters!
Bincho is located at 78 Moh Guan Terrace, #01-19, Singapore 162078. Opening hours are Tuesday – Friday: 6pm – midnight. Saturday – Sunday: 12pm – 3pm (lunch), 6pm – midnight. For more information see their Facebook page here.
Ronin
Seems like the guys behind the supremely popular The Plain and The Bravery can do no wrong, and their new cafe Ronin – looks set to follow in their footsteps. First of all, the decor is very designer-sexy, all raw wood, concrete and exposed lightbulbs – instant hipster cool. The coffee is excellent as you would expect and despite the lack of food menu, apparently they make a mean sandwich, you just have to ask the waitstaff. Feels like a very grownup coffee shop, for very cool people. Can we come in?
Ronin is located at 17 Hong Kong Street, Singapore 059660. Opening hours are Tuesday -Sunday: 8am – 8pm.
