Just Opened #6: Singapore’s newest restaurants and bars

This week’s round up of just opened, and soon-to-be-opened new spots in Singapore…

Fratini

Veteran Chef Gabriel Fratini makes his return to Singapore after a decade-long hiatus with a brand new opening – Fratini La Trattoria – and we’re excited. Having stood at the helm of three successful restaurants in Singapore since the 80’s, he left for pastures afar, but some clever soul has enticed him back or perhaps it’s just that he missed us? Opening on Greenwood Avenue at the start of this month, the focus is on traditional Italian food with a chef’s twist…think Mama’s cooking but a fancy version and we feel confident that with all Chef Fratini’s experience it’s bound to be delicious.

Fratini is located at 10 Greenwood Avenue Hillcrest Park, 289201. Opening hours are as yet unconfirmed. Do give them a call on 6468 2868.

Sushi Burrito

Sushi, and burritos. In the words of Fräulein Maria (from the Sound of Music, just in case you’re not up to speed!) ….these are a few of our favourite things, tra la la, tra la la! Put them together and you get, Sushi Burrito, a new casual ‘fast-food’ outlet on Tras St offering sushi-on-the-go in a neat, chunky burrito-style roll. Offering healthy, fresh rolls consisting of rice, greens and premium fresh fish jazzed up with house-blended sauces, there’s a keen focus on keeping things quick and economical which we appreciate, as will the lunchtime working crowd. But what’s the big deal you say, we’ve had hand rolls before? Yes but these are burrito sized y’see?! No more hunger pangs after the healthy option and for those indecisive amongst us…sushi? burrito? ….have both!

Sushi Burrito is located at 100 Tras Street, #01-06 100AM Shopping Mall, 079027. Opening hours are Monday to Sunday 11am – 10pm. For more information, see their website here.

Guzman Y Gomez

If sushi burritos sound a bit rad and you prefer the conventional guacamole, sour cream and refried bean burrito, then you’ll be excited to know that Aussie chain Guzman Y Gomez are opening their first overseas outlet in Asia Square on the 24th of October. Even more excitingly, they’ll be giving out free burritos on the day to celebrate their launch…this makes us VERY happy. Friends in Oz say that the atmosphere, music and decor is great; the staff are awesome (well, of course they are, they get to eat burritos all day, they have happy tummies!) and the food is fast, fresh and utterly delicious. Expect the usuals like burritos, burrito bowls, hard and soft shell tacos, nachos and salads, with fillings like slow cooked beef, pulled pork and spicy grilled chicken. With the Mexican wave showing no signs of abating, we say the more choice the better, welcome to Singapore!

Guzman Y Gomez is located at 12 Marina View, #02-11, Asia Square Tower 2 Food Garden, Singapore, 018961. Opening hours are initially Monday to Friday: 10am – 4pm, Closed: Saturday & Sunday, for more information see their website here.

Anthesis

Another cafe has opened its doors in Robertson Quay, fighting for their share of the neighbourhood’s coffee-lovers. Anthesis Boulangerie, Bistro & Café is all light wood, a super-stylish tiled floor, metal chairs and an unmistakeable quaintness, not to mention their prime spot along the river.  Initial reports are mixed we must confess, so if they want to succeed with stiff competition they’ll need to up their game, but when we passed by for a quick coffee on the run, we found the staff – particularly the supercool looking barrista – exceptionally friendly and he makes a fine cup of coffee. Plus we saw that they are pooch-friendly, which gives them extra brownie points in our books. Expect menu staples like all day brunch, the Tuna Tataki is meant to be fab and of course, a wide selection of bread and baked goodies.

Anthesis is located at 86 Robertson Quay, #01-01, 238245. Opening hours are Tuesday – Sunday: 8.30 – 5.30pm. For more information check out their FB here.

The Marshmallow Tree

Roasted marshmallows and coffee, we’re sold! It sounds so obvious we don’t know why no-one’s done it before! They offer a small range of savoury bites alongside the marshmallow focused menu (which has some absolute winners like Macaron Smores) and great coffee. Every cup is accompanied by a complimentary roasted marshmallow on a stick – just imagine the waves of nostalgia, reminiscing on childhood camping trips! We like the cosy feel of this compact little cafe, with its garden swing and mismatched seating – a lovely place to wile away an hour or two.

The Marshmallow Tree is located at #01-85 46 Telok Blangah Dr, 100046. Opening hours are Tuesday – Friday: 10am – 10pm, Saturday & Sunday: 9am – 10pm. For more information, see their FB page here

You asked us to tell you about brand new places and we listened – that’s just how we roll! If you know of a new spot in town that we’ve not mentioned yet, please do let us know… we value your recommendations, and we hope you never get over the fun of discovering something new and exciting. Thanks Nomads.
