The given name of Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, 李光耀, means ‘light and brightness’ and ‘bringing great glory to one’s ancestors’. The late Mr. Lee has not only brought glory to his ancestors but also to Singapore, casting the brightest of lights over Singapore during his years as our leader, and even posthumously.
Mr. Lee’s brilliance as a most extraordinary man with intelligence, integrity, vision, industriousness, and determination of the highest order, wins unanimous global admiration. This is a show for all viewers to pay tribute to Mr. Lee, as well as to appreciate and reflect upon his life’s dedication to Singapore, and the legacy and heirloom of the brilliant nation he left us with. A project five years in the making, this exhibition was seeded by the Chinese idiom ‘光宗耀祖’. Y/X drew inspirations from our founding father’s achievements and ideologies, and developed his ideas and works to celebrate the exceptional vision and life of our most committed and extraordinary leader, without whom, in the artist’s words: ‘Singapore would definitely not be what it is today.’
Artist Profile – Y/X (Chua Koon Beng)
Y/X has adopted this artist moniker of late upon his reflections as an artist within the context of more than seven billion people living today.
Y/X holds an Honours degree in Psychology and a Bachelors degree in Philosophy from the National University of Singapore. Y/X is a self-taught artist. Experimentation and materiality is key to his process and approach to making art. Y/X is primarily interested in exploring subject matters that encompass human consciousness, human conditions, dualism, and the fabric of our physical reality and spirituality.
‘光宗耀祖’ (Light and Brilliance) Exhibition is open to members of the public from Tuesday, 18 August 2015 till Thursday, 27 August 2015, 11am to 9.30pm daily, at Raffles City Shopping Centre, Level 3 Atrium. Admission is complimentary.
