Mad for Mushrooms: Matsutake Season returns to Mikuni

Located at Fairmont Singapore, Mikuni is the first of its kind with a master chef leading each of the three live stations – Teppanyaki, Sushi, and Robatayaki – to provide three different dining experiences under one roof. This sleek, sophisticated restaurant offers a very Zen-like vibe with its black-and-white interiors and cool lighting. And they sure mean business by purveying the best of Japanese seasonal produce.

So if you’ve a weakness exquisite kaiseki dinners this fall, you’re in luck. Mikuni is featuring the hard to find and highly prized fungi – Japanese matsutake (the highest grade can cost up to $2,000 per kilogram) – on their autumn seasonal menu from 15 September to 15 October 2014.

Mikuni’s Executive Chef Moon Kyung Soo has specially created a 8-course Matsutake Dinner for discerning palates. The menu starts with a Japanese-style amuse bouche of Persimmon with Matsutake Mushroom ‘Shiraae’, complemented by deliciously crisp shrimp crackers, and followed by Matsutake Mushroom Kettle Soup. After indulging in a course of the seasonal, delicilously fresh sashimi from the finest sources, relish a crisp tempura course like no other – Kyushu Abalone with Matsutake Mushroom.

But the main highlights of the menu have to be the wholesome flavour of the Matsutake Charcoal Grill, and the one helluva combination of Kagoshima Wagyu Sukiyaki with Matsutake. Imagine marbled beef of some world class quality with earthy, aromatic mushrooms – nobody’s going to resist that! Follow up with a carb-laden course of Matsutake Takikomi Gohan with Herring Fish and Miso Soup, a Japanese rice dish seasoned with dashi and soy sauce, which is typically used to celebrate the changing seasons. End the meal on a sweet and satisfying note with Chestnut Ice Cream with Japanese ‘Kyoho’ Grapes.

The 8-course Matsutake Dinner is $220++ per person, and $320++ with sake pairing. If you’d like just a taste of the magical matsutake, don’t worry, 4 of the 8 courses will be available on the à la carte menu.
