‘Neo Folk explores the work of artists in Asia who have been rediscovering their ancient roots and traditional crafts, by remixing and creating images inspired by their heritage. As a reaction to the bland souvenir art that is widely available at airports and tourist shops, these artists are using the same visual language of their ancestors to create a commentary on contemporary Asian society.’
This collection aims to showcase creative talents from Asia who have re-interpreted ancient traditional crafts into contemporary artwork, whether this be in the form of aesthetics, technique, or myths and narratives. We see this new wave of visual expression as a search for identity, a desire to rework heritage in order to shape the future.
Co-Curated by Kult Magazine, Clear Edition Gallery Tokyo & Damien Brachet this exhibition examines this movement and gets under the surface of modern Asia.
