Spectacularly located in the lush enclave of Sentosa Cove, it’s impossible not to be bedazzled by the eye-catching decor of the W Singapore – Sentosa Cove. So you can’t blame us for expecting pretty high-end stuff from the seafood on offer at this lavish establishment’s signature restaurant, The Kitchen Table. And we’ve got to admit, our expectations were more than met. In fact, we were blown away, reminiscent of young children attending their first ever buffet!
You’re probably wondering what’s so special about this spread. Well, internationally renowned Australian chef and restaurateur Peter Kuruvita’s recipes will be taking over the kitchen of The Kitchen Table every weekend (Friday & Saturday evening) till November 2015 with his magnificent smorgasbord of Seafood From The Heart. Known for his culturally inspired cooking (thanks to his Sri Lankan and Australian heritage), Chef Kuruvita is also a strong advocate of sustainable seafood, so we were having this meal in good conscience.
We started with the Soup Jaffna Kool, a delightful mixture of crab, prawn and squid, which formed a very crustacean tasting broth. With each gulp tasting like a spoon of heaven, we highly recommend kicking off the feast with this glorious soup – because there’s really no better way to whet your appetite.
We then made a beeline for the seafood selection, a variety of catches from the different oceans of the world. Immaculately fresh were the first words that came to our minds as we chomped on the sweet flesh of the Alaskan King Crab. Table manners were all but forgotten when it came to the slurp worthy Oysters that followed. The Crayfish, however, was a little too bland for our liking. But that’s us nitpicking – it didn’t sway our opinion of the wonderful array of seafood one bit.
Having ignited his passion for cooking in his grandmother’s kitchen in Sri Lanka, trying his renditions of South East Asian crabs is a must. Sitting inconspicuously on the corner of the cooking counter, was a Chilli Crab Fondue. Yep, you read that right. Stunned with amazement, we poked crisp mantous with our wooden stick and drenched it with the mouth-watering chill crab gravy. His chilli crab wasn’t the best we’ve tried, but it was good enough for us to feel that happiness coursing through our veins every single time we successfully wrestled the flesh away from the shell of the crab with our teeth.
Just when we thought that nothing could beat what we just had, the Black Pepper Crab ramped the standards up a notch. We can still remember the wonderful fragrance the crab gave off and the orgasmic sensations that were taking hold of our tastebuds. Every bit of flavourful crab flesh was beautifully intertwined with each spicy pepper speck; it was like a mountain of unadulterated goodness that tantalized every time it touched and teased our tongues.
Suddenly, we picked up the scent of a beautiful aroma and it was enough to jolt us out of our chairs to scour for its source. And there it was – Tandoori Lobster. The freshly grilled crustacean is unanimously, hands down our favourite dish of the night. Exquisitely cooked to perfection, this made us fall in love with seafood all over again.
If you only have room for one dessert, let it be the Sri Lankan Counter Curds and Treacle. We have to say that pairing them together is a stroke of genius on Chef Kuruvita’s part.
Beautifully orchestrated, W Singapore – Sentosa Cove’s Seafood From The Heart is a hugely satisfying gastronomical experience that clearly won over the little red fellas thumping in our chests.
