Having recently been on a nationwide hunt for good Middle Eastern food, Pita and Olives quickly came to my attention after some reliable recommendations from friends. Located on the 3rd floor of the newly opened AM100 mall on Tras Street, Pita and Olives is a very simple, small eatery with only around six tables best suited as a lunch spot or for takeaway.
For those of you into your Mediterranean, vegetarian or just good ol’ healthy fresh salad, this is an excellent place to stop off for a bite. The menu itself is small but the quality of the ingredients more than make up for it. Their Falafel ($11.90) is baked (not fried) making it quite a bit healthier, and you can’t go wrong with their juicy chicken Schnitzel ($13.50).
Most dishes come with Israeli salad, which is super-fresh, and their creamy, flavoursome Hummus and Tahini makes for an excellent accompaniment. If your set doesn’t come with tahini, get some on the side – it’s the best you’ll find in Singapore and a no brainer with all side dishes at $3.90.
As the name suggest, the pita bread here is fresh baked every day and is pretty much the closest thing you’ll get to decent pita in Singapore (aside from at Pita Pan). Soft, thick, fluffy pockets of bready goodness. Perfect for lapping up the dips.
Only downside about Pita and Olives is that service can be painfully slow, so if you are flexible with your time, get there either side of the lunch hours to avoid waiting…or alternatively just pre-order your food.
If you’re a big Middle Eastern food snob like me, then you’ll definitely appreciate the massive 500gram tubs of takeaway hummus or tahini which will last a good few days at least.
