It’s been a long time since I’d had a good bagel…in fact I can’t remember the last time. And there’s nothing like a good homemade bagel – subtly sweet, thick and satisfyingly chewy with a slightly crispy crust. Oh wait a minute! That’s just what they are at Restore, and having heard that the bagels are good here is precisely why I went.
Well, actually that coupled with the fact that at Restore you can enjoy their lovely baked goods and a brew while sitting on and amongst lovingly restored pieces of vintage furniture which are for sale. A cafe cum vintage furniture shop – now there is just no way I’m not going to love that.
On the bagel front, you have a choice of two different types of freshly baked bagels – a Cinnamon Raisin or Honey Wholewheat ($5.50 each). But where it gets interesting is the cream cheese it comes served with. For sure you can have your classic cream cheese but you can also opt for caramel cream cheese, or maple syrup and walnut cream cheese – a nice original touch. I especially loved the maple syrup and walnut on the cinnamon raisin bagel – a nice combination of wholesomeness, subtle sweetness with the slight crunch of the walnuts. Combined with trademark chewiness, this was feel-good factor served up bagel-style on a rustic little wooden board.
But if what you’re really after is a proper sweet treat, then move aside and make way for the Homemade Waffles ($8 each). These are lovely and crispy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside – the sign of a good waffle. You’ve got 7 choices of topping to angst over. Should you go bananas? Get some berry action? Indulge in some Hershey’s chocolate sauce? It was a tough call but after stuffing ourselves full of bagels we decided to go with Berry Good served with freshly sliced strawberries and blueberries. If you’re not a fan of whipped cream (which the waffles are served with) try switching it to ice cream – it’s damn good!
Of course Restore is also a good spot to enjoy a good cup or brain juice whether you fancy a Flat White ($4.50), Caffe Cinnamon ($5.00), or my current favourite Piccolo Latte ($4.50) and anything inbetween. Whatever you desire, it comes hot, iced or if you’re feeling extra naughty – with ice cream.
