Seafood to make you salivate at Greenwood Fish Bistro

If there’s nothing that gets you to seventh heaven like devouring a plate full of stellar seafood then get thee to Greenwood Fish Bistro. Celebrating its 10th birthday this month, this veteran and grand dame of the Singapore dining scene shows how a restaurant can hold its own, year after year whilst keeping things….and their seafood…. fresh!

Serving up coldwater and seasonal fish from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, USA and we’re happy to hear, more local waters, this is truly the place for those that have an ongoing love affair with food from under the sea.

This has been my third visit to Greenwood Fish Bistro and it’s well overdue that I sung its praises, as they are certainly due. So without further ado, here are 10 reasons why I, and soon you, will love it so:

A menu so extensive it will impress even the most seasoned foodie –from supremely tempting platters including Raw Sashimi & Cold/Hot Seafood (from $35 – $89), starters that live up to the mains, a choice of fabulous fish fillets across well over 20 varieties cooked to suit your mood (pan seared, baked, steamed, char-grilled, battered or grilled) and that’s only a small snapshot.

Crustaceans that take the cake – if you are a prawn lover, this is the place to eat and rejoice. Be sure to order the Char Grilled Queensland Eastern King Prawns ($29.95) for they are big, juicy and simply divine; or the Boiled ‘Live’ Prawns with Cocktail Sauce ($14.95) which are the epitome of fresh, quality seafood.

Singapore’s best fish and chips – whenever I’m hankering after this good old British favourite, this is the place I head to for a high quality rendition. The House Fish and Chips ($19.95) is made with tender Hoki and the batter – oh my – has to be the freshest, lightest and best executed I’ve ever tasted, twinned with the tastiest chips.

Sardines that make you say – hell yeah! If you’ve never quite understood sardines, think they are dry, too fishy etc. then the tides will turn once you sample the ones served at Greenwood Fish Bistro. Meaty, juicy and utterly delicious for ($15.95)!

At last – promotions that are worth it! Think New Zealand Greenlip Mussels for $9.95 on Mondays or Freshly Shucked Oysters for $1 each on Tuesdays…and so on for the rest of the week. Get the picture?

Paella with more seafood, and less rice. Fed up of fishing around for the good stuff in a paella? The Seafood Paella ($24.95) at Greenwood is laden with a beautifully presented layer of delectable seafood which you can pop out of the shells and stir into the thankfully lightly-executed rice base. It may not be quite the traditional paella you are expecting, but we rather loved it all the same.

Freebies! Everyone loves a freebie and so it’s just as well Greenwood Fish Bistro knows that too. If you Like & Share their Facebook (as we did at the table) you get a complimentary tasting starter – ours was a rather scrumptious mousse of salmon flakes.

Great & friendly service. In a city where good service is hard to find, let us tell you, it lives right here at Greenwood Fish Bistro.

Have a glass of wine with your meal without feeling guilty because you can order a decent house pour white wine from $10++ a glass.

Takeaway  – and for those days when you can’t face sitting in a room full of other beings of the human kind (although at Greenwood Fish Bistro they were a jolly bunch), get a nifty takeaway, especially recommended for the Fish & Chips but also available for food on the a la carte menu.

OK, this one’s a bonus point because not strictly to do with the restaurant, or because maths was never my strong point, but once you’ve finished filling your face with fantastic seafood, you can pop next door to the Greenwood Fish Market and bag yourself some lovely, fresh, fillets of yet more fish to cook up at home.

So that’s it folks. 10 reasons Greenwood Fish Bistro gets a big thumbs up from us after all this time, need you more? Surely not! This just proves that some things only get better with age.
