R. STRAUSS Vier letzte Lieder (‘Four Last Songs’)
WAGNER Tristan und Isolde, An Orchestral Passion (arranged by Henk de Vlieger)
Mark Wigglesworth conducts “an orchestral passion” which Henk de Vlieger has constructed from the music of Richard Wagner’s Tristan & Isolde, which reworks Wagner’s music into an orchestral tapestry focusing on the inner drama taking place in the minds of the two lovers. Swedish soprano Annalena Persson brings the piece to a dramatic climax in Isolde’s Liebestod, and also lends her lyrical voice to Strauss’ final masterpiece, Four Last Songs, some of the most hauntingly beautiful music he ever wrote.
“She has an almost animal presence, vital and impetuous, and her voice has a luxurious velvet tone.” The Guardian
