Whale Watching

From June to September witness the awe-inspiring majestic beauty of humpback whales making their way to the lagoons of New Caledonia. Strategically located along the migratory routes of several whale species, the tropical island serves as a prime destination for whale watching during this season as the marine creatures embark on their annual journey to breed and give birth. To see the beauty of these gentle giants in-person, hop aboard a catamaran or water taxi that glides across the turquoise waters through serene surroundings for an unforgettable glimpse of humpback whales breaching, tail slapping, and blowing spouts.

Festival du cinéma

Returning for its silver jubilee, the Festival du cinéma is a cinematic odyssey that screens the finest international and Caledonian films throughout iconic locations in the island. This annual event which will take place at La Foa this year, brings together a diverse crowd of film enthusiasts, industry insiders, and budding filmmakers from across the globe. This year, acclaimed actress and director Valérie Donzelli, who unveiled her collection, “Love and Forests”, at the Cannes Premiere in May 2023, will chair the festival. Notable guests include New Zealand director, Welbi Ings, showcasing his debut feature, “Punch.” Additional screenings include timeless classics such as Randal Kleiser’s “Grease” and the award-winning movie “Aftersun” by Charlotte Wells. 

Festival du cinéma runs from 30 June to 9 July 2023 at various locations throughout La Foa and Nouméa, New Caledonia. Tickets are priced from ₣1,280 (S$15.50). 

BCI DEVA 100 VTT

Organised by Pro Events in partnership with Aircalin, the BCI DEVA 100 VTT presents an invigorating mix of hiking and mountain biking challenges. The journey begins at the base of the Deva domain, near the Barbier field, traversing a spectrum of captivating courses. Offering an exciting off-the-beaten-path experience, participants can soak up scenic landscapes with loved ones, or race against the clock on formidable terrains against friends and rivals. With course lengths of 10 km, 25 km, and 50 km, there’s a challenge suitable for everyone. Did we mention the fantastic prizes, including top-of-the-range mountain bikes from Specialised and Orbea? 

BCI DEVA 100 VTT kicks off on 16 July 2023 at Domaine de Déva, New Caledonia. Registration begins from ₣2,000 (S$24.15).

La Nuit des Chorégraphes 2023 (The Night Of The Choreographers)

La Nuit des Chorégraphes 2023, also known as The Night Of The Choreographers, is a mesmerising spectacle where dance meets artistic expression. This event assembles a diverse cadre of gifted choreographers and dancers worldwide, who push the boundaries of movement and expression. This year, the audience will be spellbound by the performances of nine superstar dancers hailing from prestigious institutions like the Paris National Opera, Royal Ballet London, Royal Ballet of Denmark, and the Dutch National Opera & Ballet de Holland. Each will showcase their distinct styles, genres, and techniques, delivering performances rich in artistic mastery, technical prowess, and emotional depth.

La Nuit des Chorégraphes 2023 runs from 27 to 30 July 2023 at Centre Culturel du Mont-Dore, Complexe Victorin Boewa Boulari 98810, New Caledonia. Tickets are priced from ₣5,200 (S$63).

Aircalin Match Racing Cup 2023

Welcoming match racers from the Pacific region, Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia, the Aircalin Match Racing Cup 2023 is a premium international sailing competition. As a World Sailing Grade 3 event, sailors and crew members aboard identical J70 type boats will strive to outmanoeuvre each other in a thrilling race to the finish line. The racecourse, located 3 miles off the stunning Cercle Nautique Calédonien, promises challenging sailing conditions conducive to heart-stopping tactical battles. A must-attend event for sailing aficionados! 

Aircalin Match Racing Cup runs from 9 to 13 August 2023 at Cercle Nautique Calédonien, Rue Jules Garnier, Nouméa 98800, New Caledonia. Tickets are priced from ₣85-100.

Bourail Fair

A vibrant event that showcases the rich cultural heritage and agricultural traditions of the region, Bourail Fair is a must-attend festival in New Caledonia. Enjoyed by both locals and visitors the annual extravaganza which spans over several days boasts a plethora of activities, music, dance, food, art and more. The bush fair is probably best known for its equestrian shows featuring a roaring rodeo by the ranchers of Grande Terre, drifting, farm products, handcrafted leather goods, as well as the flip-flop throw contest. New Caledonia International Marathon

In a land of active citizens, the New Caledonia International Marathon is a highly-anticipated sporting event. Drawing athletes from all over the world, the event has been held in partnership with Japan since 1983 and offers a choice of four courses where runners battle for victory over 42.195 km near the scenic bays of Nouméa. The marathon is an Olympic-level qualifying event for the French Championships, and even welcomes handicapped runners to compete. Besides the races, attendees can also look forward to family races, mini-adventures and a special “Agnès Bernard Challenge” with exciting prizes to be won.

Santal and Honey Festival

Set against the idyllic backdrop of Lifou’s Sandalwood Bay, the traditional Sandalwood and Honey Festival is a chance to immerse yourself in the enchanting customs of the Easo tribe and explore the rich tapestry of Kanak culture. This festival showcases the tribe’s traditional craftsmanship and the island’s extraordinary blend of natural beauty, artisanal skill, and culinary wonder. Over the three-day event, indulge in the aromatic delights of sandalwood and the delectable flavours of honey, with a myriad of stalls offering a vast selection of products.

Sandalwood and Honey Festival runs from 1 to 3 September at Easo beach, Lifou, New Caledonia.

Shell Pacific Megarando

Since 2004, The Megarando has been one of the most significant mountain bike events in New Caledonia, attracting more than 1,500 participants, 500 visitors, 150 volunteers, and 30 exhibitors annually. This event combines the thrill of extreme sports with the natural beauty of the South Pacific. Open to all – from youngsters and adults, eager amateurs to seasoned bikers – the Megarando weekend uncovers New Caledonia’s diverse landscapes, featuring lush rainforests, breathtaking coastlines, and rugged mountains. Participants can also indulge in Zumba classes, yoga sessions and a plethora of food options to replenish their energy.

Francofolies

Associated with the famous Francofolies Festival in La Rochelle in France, Nouméa’s Francofolies offers three days of non-stop musical ecstasy. Showcasing a broad spectrum of musical genres from contemporary pop to traditional folk, this event offers both locals and tourists a taste of the best of French music. Headlining the 5th edition are notable artists like Louane, Roméo Elvis, Kyo, Sofiane Pamart, Møme, and many more. With fantastic music, a mesmerising light show, and positive vibes, Francofolies is set to ignite the Pacific nights!

Noumea Carnival

The annual Noumea Carnival infuses the streets of Noumea with a dazzling display of colours and an exuberant atmosphere. From Place Bir Hakeim to Place des Cocotiers, every corner of the city springs to life with vibrant parades, traditional dances, music, and awe-inspiring costumes reflecting the influence of Kanak culture, France, and other Pacific nations. Vanilla Festival

Celebrating one of the world’s most loved flavours, the famed Vanilla Festival in New Caledonia takes place in the tribal community of Mou, on Lifou Island. Termed the ‘black gold’ of the islands, visitors can explore the area’s abundant vanilla plantations and learn about the cultivation of this prestigious bean.
