I’ve seen my fair share of YouTube makeup tutorials over the years, but somehow every time I try to recreate ‘eyeliner wings’ or ‘smoky eye’ I end up looking like a drag queen. Couple that with my constant battle against humidity and frizzy hair, and sometimes getting ready for a night out just becomes more frustrating than fun.
So on Friday, for date night, I decided to trial The Big Blow, Singapore’s first in-home hair styling and make up service. The Big Blow is a new concept for Singapore, born to serve the city’s stylish female majority. Women who want to look sleek and made-up for an event but don’t have the time to spend all day running between hairdressers, makeup counters and nail salons.
To make life infinitely easier, The Big Blow team come to your home, office or hotel room and get you fully ready for a night out or a special occasion – including blow dry, hair styling, professional makeup and nails. The Big Blow has a very professional set-up – all their technicians have at least 5 years experience, and arrive to the door with a complete kit of hair and makeup tools to tackle any wish list.
I opted for Charlie’s Angels-esque big blown out curls, apparently one of the most popular requests and one of The Big Blow’s signature styles. While it took some time to get my mess of hair up into rollers, the result was impressive, with more body and volume than my hair has seen in years. My Big Blow stylist was friendly and super knowledgeable and gave me tips along the way to help tame my hair in future.
For makeup I chose smoky neutral browns and corals, and my Big Blow technician was great at listening to my input about the makeup colours I liked and the facial features I wanted to highlight. Her extensive makeup kit included an enviable range of luxury makeup brands – Nars, Bobbi Brown, Clinique and Shu Uemura.
At the end of our 1.5 hour session I had gloriously voluminous hair and a full face of makeup ready to walk out the door. And all I had to do was sit back and relax – with no smudged lippy, uneven eyeliner or fights with the hairbrush! And as an additional perk, I learned some new tricks and makeup techniques to add to my repertoire.
The Big Blow is available island-wide and appointments can be booked up to four hours in advance through their website. Hair styling is S$120, make up is S$120 and the combined package is S$200. The fast nails service can be added onto any package for S$20. For more information see The Big Blow website here and Facebook page here.
