The cult of the cupcake: Singapore’s best cupcakes

Cupcake (official description): A cupcake is a small cake designed to serve one person, which may be baked in a small thin paper or aluminum cup. Icing and other cake decorations such as sprinkles may be applied.

Cupcake (City Nomad description): A perfectly delicious and highly sinful ‘muffin-top-creating’ package of sweet goodness that we can’t stop eating.

Cupcakes are always delicious but what makes for a stand-out cupcake? Read on and we’ll give you our low-down of the best of the best!

Swirls

We must confess we’re loyal fans of Swirls, who we would say do one of the best cupcakes in Singapore – yes a bold claim, but have you tried them? Their American style cupcakes are perfectly moist, with sweet, sugary frosting, and some of the flavour specials they offer are simply divine! Bounty, Peanut Butter & Jelly, Lavender… they are imaginative and invariably absolutely delicious.

Swirls Bake Shop is located at 8 Rodyk Street #01-08, Singapore 238216. Opening hours are Monday – Sunday: 11am-7pm. Check out their Facebook page here and for orders call 6634 4765.

Topped with a light fluff cream, these moist little cakes are pure yum. We love their imaginative daily flavours such as Sea Salt Caramel Mocha- fluffy caramel cream with a salty caramel fondant & moist mocha cake, Popped – fluffy savoury corn cream and popcorns with a moist corn cake and Rose Marshmallow Chocolat- fresh rose marshmallow with moist chocolate cake. ” Delighting your palates” is the team’s mantra and they work on that daily to bring our tummies a little happiness!

Fluff Bakery

Following on from a rather impressive Instagram rise to fame, Fluff Bakery, has just opened own store whereas previously you could only pick up their delightful cupcakes at the Penny University cafe. Their dedicated following is down to delicious cupcakes which come with a tasty surprise filling…plus their flavours are deliciously innovative with offerings such as Raspberry Meringue, Gingerbread Key Lime Pie, and one that stood out for us, a Rose and Lychee Cupcake.  All cupcakes are halal, and baked with fresh fruits, mascarpone and cream cheese, and unlike other bakeries, no buttercream and fondant is used.

Fluff Bakery is located at 12, Jalan Pisang, Singapore 199079. Opening hours are tbc. For more information please check out their FB page here.

Kisses

Kisses cupcakes are not too sweet but still packed with flavour, so does that mean it’s ok to have more than one? With new combinations of flavours such as Kaya – a Pandan-infused coconut cake with a kaya cream cheese frosting and kaya swirl to impress, these pretty, light and fluffy little cupcakes will give you that sweet fix but without feeling like you’re drowning in sugar.

Kisses Bakery is located at 55 Tiong Bahru Road #01-02, Singapore 160055. Opening hours are Tuesdays – Sundays: 11.00 am – 7.00 pm. For more information check out their Facebook page here and to place an order call 6536 7470.

Cupcakes with Love

Is it possible for a cupcake to look retro? The cupcakes at Cupcakes with Love have a charming ‘we just rustled these up in the kitchen’ quality that remind us of school parties and bake sales! With less icing, they let the cake do all the talking here and the favours are delish. We’re loving the signature chocolate rum ‘adult cupcake’ and the cute single malteser toppings.

Cupcakes with Love are located at 216 Joo Chiat Road, #01-12, Soho Life, Singapore 427483. Opening hours are Monday – Wednesday & Friday – Saturday: 11am to 6pm. Closed on Thursdays and Sundays. For more information see their Facebook page here and to make an order call 6440 0450.

Cupcake Engineer

These guys are less about winning a beauty contest and more about interesting flavour combinations (Durian cupcake anyone?!) and punchy flavour. They don’t believe in colouring, artificial flavouring, sprinkles or heart-shaped sugar decorations that have no function other than to make a cupcake look pretty, so everything you see on their cupcakes add flavour and textural balance. Pretty serious about cupcakes! Good job they taste divine!

Cupcake Engineer is located at #01-03A Cluny Court, 501 Bukit Timah Road, Singapore 259760, Opening hours are Tuesday – Sunday: 11am-9pm, and HILL V2 4 Hillview Rise #02-10, Singapore 667979, Opening Hours: Sunday – Thursday and Public Holidays 11am – 9pm, Friday, Saturday and Eve of Public Holidays 10am – 10pm. Twelve Cupcakes

Two words….Lychee Martini…as a cupcake! Will wonders never cease! Moist and fluffy with a light smooth frosting, these cupcakes are not only lush and pretty much what fuelled the cupcake movement here, but also touched by celebrity hands as Twelve Cupcakes is the passion project of local celebrity couple Daniel and Jaime Teo. Jaime Teo was Miss Singapore Universe in 2001 which gives us hope because if she looks as fabulous as she does after eating her cupcakes, there’s hope for all of us!

Twelve Cupcakes can be found at a number of locations, for more information go to their website. Opening hours are Monday – Sunday: 11am – 9pm. You can also check out their Facebook page here.
