The Fabulous Baker Boy to the rescue!!!!

Cakes glorious cakes! One thing’s for sure, we can never get enough of them over at City Nomads. And so it was, that we were watching, waiting for the day when the Fabulous Baker Boy would fling open its doors and take up residence at Viridian Art House.

Priding itself on offering “food you want to eat”, that certainly fits the bill and extends way beyond just magnificent cakes. But yes I’m going to torture you because my dears, I’ll give you a little taster with the pictures below and then save the cakes and also the best til last….

Nestled in the foothills of Fort Canning Park, The Fabulous Baker Boy presents the perfect excuse to go and have a nosy at whatever exhibition is currently running at Viridian Art House (do check in advance as they are intermittent), and then adjourn next door to the main task at hand – grazing to your hearts content!

Food for your soul comes in the form of simple soups, salads, sandwiches, pastas, pies and curries. In short: comfort food.

Ahhh Pastrami Sandwich ($10) – this is what all sandwiches should be like! An old school favourite of mine turned into something more discerning, it’s the combination of the crusty Focaccia, relish, mayonnaise and caramelised herbed onions that makes this one an absolute hands-down winner.

The House Cottage Pie ($14) tasty though it was, with its country-style tomato sauce and smooth creamy potato mash screamed out for a little more mince in there to balance the dish better. More meat and I’d be a happy lassie!

I didn’t get to indulge on this occasion but the amazing aroma from someone else’s order of the Garlic Fries with Truffle Aioli ($9.50) certainly turned my head as my nose followed the wonderful waft…one for next time!

If you need something refreshing to wash your food down, which is rather likely seeing as it can all get a bit hot down at the foothills of Fort Canning, then I recommend their homemade ice tea which is the perfect remedy for us sweaty bettys out there.

OK have I left you hanging on long enough yet? Well then it’s time for cake! You will probably want to wet yourself when you see the cake selection in here because it is one mighty fine selection of grand-dame cakes. Baked fresh daily and displayed in all their glory, how on earth you can decide which to tantalize your taste buds with is anyone’s guess, because they are all so tempting. We found the best strategy was to not think about it too much and just jump in!

Triple Choc Cake, Green Tea Praline Cake, Almond Praline, Red Velvet Cake, Apple Cider, Carrot Cake…salivating yet? We were.

In the end we plumped for a slice of Big Lub’s Carrot Cake ($8 a slice) and the Red Velvet Cake ($8.50 a slice). As I said I’m saving the best til last. Therefore let’s start with the Carrot Cake.

Like all the others, it comes in a HUGE slice. I’d be impressed if anyone out there can devour the whole thing yourself because as far as I’m concerned, these slices were made for sharing. Lovely and moist and quite subtle in flavour, though it’s probably not the best rendition I’ve had ever (because I love it when the spices REALLY come through), it’s certainly up there in the top 10…

However the absolute show stopper was the Red Velvet Cake.

 

So orgasmic was it, that the following weekend we made a special detour just to pick up another slice. There is something that makes this cake amazingly sinful and that’s the beautifully rich, chocolate buttermilk icing which combined with the wonderful texture of the interior of the cake and vanilla buttermilk layering, makes the whole thing go schmoodge in your mouth in the most amazingly intense way. I could eat this every day of my life and want for nothing else.

But aside from knowing that this is going to be my absolute go-to place to fix my Red Velvet cravings, I will also be back to try out their brunch some day. I mean, Spiced Apple Cider pancakes…who can pass that up on a Sunday?
