THE ST PETERSBURG BALLET PERFORMS SWAN LAKE

Following their sold out Paris season, the internationally acclaimed St Petersburg Ballet comes to Singapore for the first time to present their full-length classic production of the world’s most famous ballet – Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake! The 55 member company of St Petersburg Ballet continues to collect rave reviews around the world and thrill audiences with breathtaking scenery and magnificent costumes. Now St Petersburg Ballet will perform the immortal and enchanting Swan Lake for a limited season.

First performed in St Petersburg in 1895, Swan Lake, with its unrivalled ‘white acts’, its spectacular and dramatic ballroom scene, sublime music and deeply moving story, is the ballet that towers above all others. The story of Swan Lake tells of young Prince Siegfried who falls in love with the Swan Queen Odette, a young woman transformed into a White Swan by an evil sorcerer. Odette’s story of how she is destined to remain a swan, only taking human form at night, fascinates Siegfried. He learns of how the evil sorcerer’s spell over Odette can only be broken by a man’s undying love. He is enthralled by her beauty. The Prince pledges his undying love to her.

At the Coming of Age Ball when Siegfried has turned 21, he must choose a bride. Young maidens from foreign lands are formally presented to him, but his undying love is already pledged to Odette. During the party, Siegfried is fooled by the evil sorcerer, Von Rothbart, into declaring his undying love to Odile, Von Rothbart’s daughter, who bears an uncanny resemblance of Odette. Realising his inadvertent betrayal of Odette, the Prince rushes back to the lake. Odette is aware of the evil sorcerer’s trickery and Siegfried battles him and destroys his power. Prince Siegfried and Odette are then re-united. The St. Petersburg Ballet is renowned globally not just for beautiful dancers but also for stunning and grand full-length productions.

Swan Lake is happening from Thursday, 28 May to Sunday, 31 May at the MasterCard Theatres at Marina Bay Sands.
