Top 5 Things to Do in Singapore this week: 25th – 31st August 2014

The end of August heralds the arrival of an internationally acclaimed play (that’s travelled all the way from Cape Town), a cool night market at the Singapore Art Museum, and the crowning of the Lion City’s best craft beer home brewers. So here are our cherry pickings of what’s happening in Singas this week:

For the multidisciplinary art cognoscenti – SPORE Art Salon

This SPORE Art Salon is an initiative created for visual artists to meet, mingle, inspire, and share with performing artists (and us amateurs get the best of both worlds!). This Tuesday’s eclectic lineup includes Doodu Karani, a traditional musician from the Bagobo Tagabawa tribe in the Philippines, performance poet Marylyn Tan, sound healer Pablo Aldunate, and visual artist Jasmine Teh. Best part? It’s just a $10 donation at the door per guest, and all proceeds benefit the featured artists. Who says art has to be expensive?

SPORE Art Salon is taking place 26 Aug, 7.30-10.30pm at Artistry, 17 Jalan Pinang, Singapore 199149. For more information, visit their facebook page.

For the dramaturges – Mies Julie

Fans of internationally acclaimed South African writer-director Yael Farber, rejoice! Her modern adaptation of the August Strindberg’s classic, which takes the story from late 19th century Sweden to 18 years after apartheid in South Africa, is finally hitting our shores, all thanks to Singapore Repertory Theatre. Expect a sizzling tale of power differentials, sexuality, racial tensions, mothers, and the motherland.

Mies Julie is running 27 Aug – 13 Sep at DBS Arts Theatre, 20 Merbau Road, Robertson Walk, Singapore, 239035. See here for more information and tickets.

For the craft beer connoisseurs – iBrew Challenge

Head down to Singapore’s biggest amateur craft brewing competition this Saturday! Back for its 8th year, the contest will give homebrewers an opportunity to show their stuff off to the rest of the beer-enthusiast community/ The panel of experts will be judging across 5 categories – Lager, Ale, IPA, Belgian, and Special. Tickets cost $60 at the door and $50 before 30 August, and it includes free-flowing craft beers.

iBrew Challenge is happening 30 Aug, 2-7pm, at Brewers’ Craft, Blk 354, Clementi Avenue 2, #01-191, Singapore 120354. Email tickets@ibrew.com for tickets or purchase at the door.

For the local heroes – The Local People x Singapore Art Museum Night Market

The Local People have left their cosy nest at Hoot Kiam Road to bring us the best of Singapore’s retail brands, food, and music at the Singapore Art Museum. Kerby (Kerbside Gourmet’s beloved foodtruck) is gonna be there, as well as Hoopla Coffee and Cupplets. Roving street magicians and live art showcases will make this one night bazaar to remember, ending the Singapore Night Festival 2014 with on a sweet note. It’s cash-only transactions at the event, so leave the plastic at home and hit the ATM before heading down.

TLP x SAM Night Market is happening 30 Aug, 7pm-2am, at 8Q Singapore Art Museum, 8 Queen Street, Singapore 188535.

For the satire film buffs – This is Spinal Tap

If you were in your formative years in the 1980s, Rob Reiner’s rock music mockumentary would make a laughter-inducing 82-minute walk down memory lane. This 1984 work chronicles the ups and downs (think slow ticket sales and internal conflicts) of fictional British heavy metal band called Spinal Tap on their concert tour across USA, satirising the wild and pretentious behavior of rock and heavy metal stars of the 1980s. The screening is complimentary with a $15++ purchase of food and beverage at the Screening Room, so it’s dinner and after-dinner plans, sorted.

This is Spinal Tap is showing 30 August, 8.45pm, at Screening Room, 12 Ann Siang Road, Singapore 069692. Reserve your spot at 6221-1694 or email info@screeningroom.com.sg. See here for more information.
