Top 5 things to do in Singapore this week: 28th April – 4th May 2014

This week we’re getting down with the culture crew as the hotly anticipated Shakespeare in the Park returns once again to Fort Canning, music extraordinaire A.R Rahman sets Gardens by The Bay alight with a music and sound extravaganza, we re-discover the beauty and history of Singapore’s best loved enclaves with Jane’s Walk, and get ready for a boogie-licious night of music with the Asian premiere of The Rise and Fall of Little Voice. If you couldn’t give two squeaks about culture, then don’t worry we have just the thing for you – a night of tacos and tequila instead – chido!

1. Lose yourself in a world of Shakespeare in the Park

The highly anticipated Shakespeare in the Park returns to Fort Canning with The Merchant of Venice. A magical experience where the greenery of Fort Canning is transformed into a lavish stage under the stars for a night of villanry, quick wit, justice and mercy. Book your tickets, pack up your picnic and get the wine at the ready.

Shakespeare in the Park is taking place from the 30th April at Fort Canning Park, Fort Gate, 51 Canning Rise, Singapore, 179872. For dates, times and ticketing information please see SISTIC here.

All Nomads are entitled to 15% off when booking tickets for the Wednesday 7th May 2014 show at 7:30pm. Please click here to book and claim your 15% discount.

2. Ditch the lemon and salt for Tacos and Tequila at Hombre Cantina

If you’re the kind of person that thinks the only place tequila has, is to be knocked back in a club, then it might be time for a bit of education. No better place and fun way for that to happen than at one of our favourite Mexican joints in town where you’ll learn to appreciate tequila and its cousin mezcal as the noble spirits they actually are, along with some very yummy Mexican food.

Tacos & Tequila is taking place on 30th April, 7pm – 9pm at Hombre Cantina, 53 Boat Quay, Singapore, 049842. For more information and ticketing see here.

3. Be wowed by a music and sound extravaganza at A.R Rahman live in concert

Hailed by Time magazine as ‘the world’s most prominent and prolific film composer’, music extraordinaire A.R. Rahman who won two Academy Awards for the score of ‘Slumdog Millionaire,’ will be in Singapore for a one night only ‘sound and light’ musical extravaganza. We’re pretty sure you’ll leave with your skin tingling as this music maestro does his thing complete with a whopping 78 piece orchestra.

A.R Rahman’s Infinite Love Live in Concert is taking place on 30th April at The Meadows- Gardens by the Bay, 18 Marina Gardens Drive, Singapore, 018953. For more information and ticketing see here.

4. Fall in love with Singapore again with Jane’s Walk

In our hectic pace of life, we can sometimes forget to appreciate that which is around us and the history behind it, so we’re pleased to hear that the Jane’s Walk movement has hit Singapore in a series of neighbourhood walks. Whether you fancy taking a trip back to Singapore of World War II, retracing stories of the Chinese population or connecting with nature, with 11 walks planned there’s something for everyone  – thumbs up Jane!

Jane’s Walk is taking place from 2nd – 4th May at various locations across Singapore. For more information on walks and to sign up visit the Jane’s Walk Singapore website here.

5. Take in a sparkling night of music with The Rise And Fall of Little Voice

One of our favourite local theatre companies, Pangdemonium, takes on the Olivier award-winning comedy about a little girl with a big voice for its Asian premier.  Set in 1970s Singapore, expect it to be not only very groovy but also a humorous and heartwarming night filled with colourful characters and feel good music.

The Rise And Fall of Little Voice is showing from 2nd – 18th May at Drama Centre Theatre, 100 Victoria Street, #05-01, National Library Building, Singapore, 188064. For more information and ticketing see SISTIC here.
