Top 5 Things to Do This Week: 29 September to 5 October 2014

It’s time to wake up – September is ending (okay, bad Green Day joke there). From farmers’ markets to a Beatles’ musical, and an annual ice cream festival, there’s something for everyone this week as we ease into October:

For the Beatlemaniacs – Let It Be

Starting out as a West End concert to celebrate The Beatles’ 50th anniversary, Let It Be has toured globally and starts its 6-day run in Singapore this Wednesday. The show begins with the four actors playing at the Cavern Club in 1962 before progressing to the 1963 Royal Variety Performance at the Prince of Wales Theatre. Then the journey to USA begins with The Ed Sullivan Show, leading to New York City’s Shea Stadium and culminating with the disbanding of the group at the end of 1960s. Expect to hear classic hits of the world’s most famous rock ‘n roll band, like ‘Hey Jude’, ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand’, and ‘Yesterday’.

Let It Be is running 1-6 October 2014 at Resorts World Theatre, Resorts World Sentosa, 8 Sentosa Gateway, Singapore, 098269. For more information and tickets, see SISTIC.

For those who appreciate photojournalism – Singapore International Photography Festival 2014

As the largest international photo festival held in Southeast Asia, this biennial event is the platform for critical thought and academic discussion on photography in the region. Check out the SIPF Open Call Showcase, which features works by 48 photographers from 23 countries, and Types: After Becher, which celebrates the documentation of industrial architecture and structures in late 1950s Germany by collaborative duo Bernd and Hilla Becher. Folks who’ll like to learn more should register for public talks by Nikon photographers that cover a wide range of topics like underwater photography and even wedding photography.

Singapore International Photography Festival 2014 is running 3 October – 30 November 2014. For more information, see website.

For those who scream for ice cream – Ben & Jerry’s Chunk Fest 2014

Ben & Jerry’s annual ice cream chow down is back, and this time amidst the lush greenery of Gardens by the Bay. Featuring more than 20 exciting flavours (some flown in specially from the US like Red Velvet Cake and their new Core line), there’ll also be live bands, games, and an evening screening of the movie Divergent. But awesome ice cream aside, the spotlight of Chunk Fest this year is very much on the Sundae School, an intimate and interactive forum with 6 local beacons of social innovation speaking on their experiences and the Social Enterprise Marketplace where you can shop jewellery from Saught and sip on coffee by Bettr Barista.

Ben & Jerry’s Chunk Fest 2014 is happening 4 October 2014, 2-10pm, at The Meadow, Gardens by the Bay, 18 Marina Gardens Drive, Singapore 018953. For more information, see their Facebook Page.

For the party animals – Play Live: 2014

This mega event will see the halls of Marina Bay Sands Expo turned into different party zones like UV lounges with glowing furniture and big screens, an indoor dome bar, and dance floors bathed in laser glows and special effects. This music festival-club-concert concept will be featuring up-and-coming Youtube stars Daniela Andrade and Mike Tompkins, as well as X Factor Australia 2013 winner Dami Im. Dance your hearts out to DJ sets by US progressive house duo TV Noise and Hong Kong-based Singaporean DJ Tenashar, who’ll be shaking things up with her brand of EDM and trance.

Play Live: 2014 is happening 4 October 2014, 7pm-3am, at Marina Bay Sands Expo & Convention Centre, 10 Bayfront Avenue, Singapore 018956. For more information and tickets, see website.
