Beauty of Kogei: Art Crafts in Japan

The Japan Foundation and Japan Creative Centre, Embassy of Japan are delighted to present a new exhibition entitled, “Beauty of KŌGEI: Art Crafts in Japan”. This exhibition introduces selected art crafts from 14 of the most influential and prominent Japanese artists, providing a glimpse of the intricate techniques and designs involved in Japanese ‘Monozukuri’ (craftsmanship). In conjunction with this exhibition , a symposium will be held to further explore the roles of art crafts in an industrial context.

About the Symposium

Art crafts –aesthetically engaged objects made by hand, in which function follows beauty and form –are widely known and uniquely flourished in the regions in Asia, influencing each other in their historical accumulations. It has also been provoking debates over authenticity, industrialization, traditional succession and national identity.

This symposium considers how art crafts have been developed and transformed in the face of new economic and cultural contexts, examining the impact on the production and movement of contemporary art crafts in Asia.

This symposium also explores further the role of art crafts in industries such as fashion and design, as well as in the context of high art.
