For a splendid weekend out on Orchard Road in Singapore, you probably can’t find a much better start than Mitzo’s tasty offerings, conveniently condensed into an all-you-can-eat a la carte brunch. It’s a great way to sample the contemporary Chinese restaurant’s signatures for a fixed investment, and provides another experience for those returning for Executive Head Chef Nicky Ng.
Priced at $68++ per adult for food, the top up for free flow cocktails, bubbly, wines, and beer will set each diner back by another $60++ – making it one of the cheapest champagne brunches in Singapore, really. We didn’t bother with the Pasqua Romeo & Juliet Prosecco, but washing down delectable dim sum with the crisp and fruity Lanson Black Label Brut hit the spot just right. If you’re opting for the booze, try some of Head Bartender Azlam Kadir’s cocktails like She So Fine, a refreshing tipple of osmanthus infused spiced rum, fresh shisho, and lime or the more robustly flavoured Empress Sour (think chrysanthemum infused cognac, rum, goji berry, egg white, and lemon).
The food menu is extensive to say the least, with almost 60 dishes to choose from. We tried – and failed – to order everything, so here are the highlights from our meal. The supreme special dishes are where you’ll find premium ingredients. Each diner is entitled to a complimentary first serving of a bamboo clam, live lobster, and abalone dish. We highly recommend you get the lobster or abalone with minced pork in soya milk congee – we never thought about using soya bean milk this way and it’s genius – and the steamed garlic bamboo clam in soya.
The benchmarks of a great Cantonese restaurant (for me) are the soups and roast meats. The Double-boiled Soup a-la-Chef of the day with cordyceps flower and chicken was so comforting we had two bowls, as did we with the Mitzo Special Barbecued Pork. The crunchy glaze on the fatty, flavourful pork makes this one of our favourite char siu in Singapore.
Mitzo’s dim sum selection at brunch natural includes favourites like shrimp dumplings, pork dumplings, and steamed barbecued pork buns (albeit in a charcoal shell). Must orders from this section include theWild Mushroom Dumpling for a hefty dose of earthy umami in a well made wrapper, the moreish Crispy Beancurd Roll, and the Escargot Cheese Puff with wasabi mayo for a distraction from all those dumplings.
Amongst the meaty mains, the Stir Fried Black Pepper Beef Cubes and Wuxi-Style Sweet & Sour Pork get our top votes. The marbling in the beef was pretty good for an all-you-can-eat dish and there’s a bit more complexity in the pork than the usual at a zi charstall. Still have space? Try squeezing in the Stir Fried Scallops with egg white and fresh milk too.
Even if you’re not big on dessert, don’t reject the Hokkaido Milk Cheese Tart if it makes its way to you. They only bake them a few times during the duration of brunch so they’re likely to run out by 2.30pm. For something cold, the Chilled Aloe Vera comes with osmanthus jelly and lychee sorbet for a refreshing finish – so does the Chilled Coconut & Red Bean Cake.
Mitzo is located at Level 4, Grand Park Orchard, 270 Orchard Road, Singapore 238857, p.+65 6603 8855. Brunch is available on Saturdays, Sundays, and selected public holidays 11.3oam-2.30pm.
