One of the founding members of DJ collective ‘Spaced Out Disco Juice’ , Suren alongside Zushan, Julian and Ritz have teamed up to host the “Spaced Out Show” – a live online streaming session featuring Singapore and international DJs and artistes from 2014-2015.
A huge collector of music, Suren’s ability to play diverse genres and high energy sets has led him to make guest appearances in both underground and high profiled events and parties. Currently the Head Resident DJ at Cé La Vi Singapore, he has shared the decks alongside international guest acts such as Gregor Salto, Nora En Pure, Sharam Jey, Ramon Tapia, Vanilla Ace, Nakadia, Lil Jon, Cash Money, Spinbad, Earworm, Four Color Zack, and Shintaro.
In this edition of City Nomads Radio, we speak to Suren on his club residency, his music and his thoughts of the dancefloor.
Hi Suren! What have you been up to?
I am currently the Head Resident DJ at Cé La Vi located at the rooftop of the Marina Bay Sands Singapore. I play there three nights a week and when I’m not working, I listen to more music, travel, try to keep myself healthy and am trying to get my creative juices running as I embark on a new project – stay tuned!
Describe your sound in less than 10 words.
Wow, that’s a tough question for me because I play many different types of sounds. I do have a few preferences but I mostly like to keep it energetic, sometimes spacey, mostly bassline driven while I sneak in a few synths. How’s that?
For you, is the dancefloor a lonely place where you lose yourself in music or a communal place where you feel connected to everyone?
A bit of both to be honest. It really depends on the space, time and mood. There have been instances when I am the only person on the dancefloor getting lost in the music and there have been equal instances where everyone on the dancefloor are in sync – the energy both times is magical and only music can actually make that happen.
Do you think having a DJ club residency changes your sound?
Having a club residency has given me a whole new perceptive about DJing and playing for crowds. The difference between playing for a dance floor and making people dance is really just creating an experience – you always want to make people dance. Seeing people feel the music and lose themselves in it is something I will never tire of.
What is one thing people don’t know about you?
Most people think that I only play hip hop or mainstream Top 40s music. On the contrary, I have a lot of love and respect for the underground music movement and enjoy playing house and electronic music. I have had the privilege of playing at parties at some awesome venues such as Kilo Lounge and Council at The Headquarters – both amazing spaces that I will jump at the opportunity to play at over and over again.
