Legendary pianist Krystian Zimerman returns to partner Lan Shui and the SSO in Brahms’ First Piano Concerto, one of the towering peaks of the genre. Schoenberg’s early music is very much in the late-Romantic tradition, drawing inspiration from Wagner, Mahler and Strauss and characterized by his exceptional skill in orchestration. The pinnacle of this phase is his opulent and epic tone poem Pelleas & Melisande, based on Maeterlinck’s popular play about a pair of doomed lovers. Scored for a huge orchestra, this work has been championed by conductors as diverse as Boulez, Abbado and Karajan.
‘Gala:Krystian Zimerman (SSO)’ is happening on Saturday, 10 January at the Esplanade Concert Hall at 7.30pm.
