Meet Singapore’s Newest Locally Distilled Spirit: Soulsister Spirits Gin – Singapore Edition

Do we really need another made-in-Singapore spirit? If your answer is yes, then say hello to our city’s newest ginSoulsister Spirits Gin – Singapore Edition (S$69, 500ml).

Created by locally-founded beverage distributor Gain Brands International (with local distiller Simon Zhao) in celebration of its fifth anniversary, the Singapore edition is the first expression under this proprietary brand. Distilled in Singapore, this London Dry Gin with a Southeast Asian twist is produced by distillation in a copper and stainless-steel combination still for a slower heating process by steam, to produce a cleaner, smoother and more balanced taste.

All seven botanicals – juniper, galangal, tamarind, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaf, Ceylon cinnamon, and coriander seed – are macerated in a stainless-steel tank for two weeks, and left to rest in a tank for another two weeks following distillation, allows the botanicals to infuse better.

“Now that Gain Brands International has grown into a dynamic team of entrepreneurial ladies, the time is right for the debut of Soulsister Spirits Gin – Singapore Edition, which is created with a feminine touch and inspired by the spices and botanicals in multicultural Singapore, ” says co-founder Marianna Fossick. While we don’t approve of gendering alcohol – nothing kills a night out more than bartenders hawking ‘girly drinks’ to me – it’s great that the Gain Brands team has decided to donate 10% of the sales of SoulSister Spirits Gin – Singapore Edition hampers (S$80) to local charity Daughters Of Tomorrow.

The organisation aims to support women from low-income families in Singapore who are struggling to find and sustain a living, and claims that 80 cents out of every dollar we receive is channeled to support mothers from underprivileged families in their back-to-work journey.

Our verdict? We’d have it again – at S$69 a bottle, it’s the most affordable locally produced gin, but the combination of botanical reminds me more of Thailand than of Singapore. Perfect for a tom yum-tini, really.

SoulSister Spirits Gin – Singapore Edition retails for S$69, and the Luxx Hamper at S$80, which includes two bottles of Double Dutch Indian Tonics and two bottles of Double Dutch Skinny Tonics. Available here.
