Studio Review: Pilates Gets A Revival With Off Duty Pilates, Singapore

Looking to lengthen and tone your body? Pilates is usually the most recommended exercise of choice – well, besides yoga. While the history of Pilates and Reformer Pilates date back to the 1920s, it’s only recently that the latter started trending in Singapore. One of the newest studio spaces in town is Off Duty Pilates, and they’re keeping things approachable, accessible, and affordable.

Generally, the workout is a great form of strength, postural, flexibility, balance and endurance training, and can be designed to target one specific area or as a whole body muscular exercise. The only difference between both stylers of workout is that Reformer Pilates provides more exercise combinations; whereas on the mat your body weight provides resistance against gravity, making the workout more challenging in many cases.

Run by the people behind Project Açaí, their experienced Pilates instructors created this intimate fitness studio for the modern day warriors. Located in Tanjong Pagar, you’ll be welcome by textured and white walls with pops of colour and pretty terrazzo stone counters. Comfortable, settling, and well-lit with natural light, there are two studios here: a spacious group room equipped with seven Reformers and TRX suspensions ropes, and a private studio with mixed Pilates equipment. Lockers, vanity rooms and showers are also available for your pre and post workout needs.

Being the first Pilates-focused studio in Singapore, Off Duty offers hybrid classes featuring Reformer and TRX suspension trainers (trust us, it’s a lot of fun). We had a taste of their signature TRX-HIIT class with the instructor, Julie Jang, and were impressed with how much flexibility we gain on the Reformers. We learnt about the types of spring resistance that aid with each exercise, and the TRX suspension ropes help to train your arms so it’s a full body workout that makes you feel fulfilled at the end of every class.

From beginner basics to hybrid training, cardio-focused, and restorative classes, Off Duty offers six types of group classes to help you achieve your fitness goals. With the belief of the importance of a solid and strong foundation, each group class consists of a maximum of seven people ensuring that you get the attention you deserve. Private sessions are also available for those who seek personalised training in a dedicated private studio. Korean expats in Singapore can request for a Korean speaking class too!

Off Duty Pilates is located L2, 5A/6A Craig Rd, Singapore 089665. Trial packages are available for first-timers from S$60 for 3 classes. More details here.
