Sushi Burrito: Tasty, satisfying yet largely guilt-free food!

As any foodie worth their stripes will know, indulging your tastebuds all too often means loosening your belt buckle.  Step up Sushi Burrito, an unassuming eatery tucked away in the 100AM Mall in Tanjong Pagar, offering that holy grail of tasty, satisfying yet largely guilt-free food.

Sherry Ang, founder and very hands-on ‘Managing Yakuza’, is a delight – full of passion and enthusiasm for the concept she came across being served from hip food vans on the West Coast of the USA and decided that she had to bring to Singapore.

So what is a sushi burrito? Essentially, a low-carb version of a giant maki roll but with touches of its Mexican cousin when it comes to composition and styling. Think familiar nori sheet exterior, a layer of sushi rice (albeit a much lower proportion than the classic maki roll would include, hence the ‘low-carb’), original but certainly sushi-inspired meat, fish or seafood fillings, a generous portion of crunchy vegetables and home-made sauce – all assembled freshly into a burrito-sized hand roll.

Having decided to avoid the lunchtime rush, we arrived in the evening when the place was relatively quiet, but nonetheless were made to feel welcome by Sherry and her attentive team.  Feeling suitably smug about how health-conscious we were being  – notably thanks to the calorie count for every item on the menu – we decided to go all out and opt for a selection of rolls. All were excellent and each contained their own unique twist, but our favourites had to be the 2 ‘Signature Roll’ options:

The Rainbow Shrimp ($10.90 full/$5.90 half) offered a satisfying contrast between succulent prawn, Naruto Maki, pickled daikon (or ‘takuan’), crunchy vegetables and deliciously sweet brown sauce.

However the Signature Fried Back Roll ($12.90 full/$6.90 half), which on paper we were more than a little unsure of – being not only deep-fried but also with the unexpected twist of curry sauce and cheese as accompaniments to its crab meat filling – turned out to be the star of the show.

Another unexpected treat was the Forest Salad ($7.90) – a more-than-generous side serving of a variety of delicate little mushrooms served warm and tossed in a perfectly balanced wafu dressing of soy, rice vinegar and oil.

Finally – because when it’s healthy, why not?! – we topped off the meal with a slice of Greentea Cake ($3.50) which although not mind-blowing, was refreshing and light.

This is an absolute gem for the health-conscious glutton looking for fast, delicious food options – and with a constantly evolving menu and dynamo-owner, you’re unlikely to get bored any time soon.
