Singapore without a doubt is fast becoming a mecca of whisky lovers, and with the demand, there are whisky bars opening up all over. One of best (if not the best) is The Auld Alliance, whose name is derived from the truce between the kingdoms of Scotland and France in the middle ages.
Hidden away on the second floor of the newly renovated Rendezvous Hotel, The Auld Alliance is a site to behold in many, many ways.
Let me put it this way – the drinks menu (most of which is whisky) here is 52 pages long and you can see most of them lining the bar walls. It’s really quite a site.
So as you can imagine, the theme here is whisky. Of course there are other drinks available; wines, champagne, various other spirits, but this is a place where you should really be looking to expand your whisky horizons.
The range her is staggering and it can be a little daunting so don’t be afraid of asking the staff to guide you through the menu and making some recommendations.
I, being a fan of the more smokey, peated whiskies, was very happy to see a healthy selection from Islay and Cao-Ila (Scotland), and Nikka and Hibeki (Japan). But trust me, there’s something here for everyone. And price-wise, it’s quite reasonable. For a ‘dram’ (40ml), expect to pay in the region of $12-15 for something decent, $16-24 for something excellent, and $25 for something that is so rare you might never see it on another menu anywhere else! Of course if you are looking to buy a bottle, the range is even greater.
Apparently the inventory here is valued at about $4 million, including bottles that are close to 100 years old. It’s quite incredible.
Basically, The Auld Alliance is awesome and de facto the best whisky bar in Singapore. Oh, and it has its own private cigar room. Interested in joining us there?
