Feeling creative? This week’s lineup sees a variety of exciting events to tickle your fancy. Engage your mind with a screening of The Block Party or wander through the latest exhibition at Coda Culture. For the more hands-on approach, try your hand at crafts or cooking, Peranakan-style. For those who want to kick back and relax, sounds like a sunset cruise is in order.
Now Screening: The Block Party
Performed to a full house at The Esplanade last year, The Block Party is back again, this time on our screens as part of The Community Theatre’s fifth anniversary. Performed in English with some Malay and Mandarin, the docu-performance directed by Rizman Putra, tackles the heart of blindsided and misrepresented issues and highlights the small joys in life amidst struggles. Still wondering where the party’s at? Hop online to join this quirky crew and figure it out.
The Block Party will be screened online from 22 — 28 August 2020 in collaboration with The Projector.
Step into Shen Jiaqi’s World of Contemporary Art
Yellow lines are ever-present in our daily lives in Singapore, such as the yellow box on roads marking a zone for motorists to not enter. Singaporean artist Shen Jiaqi’s newest solo exhibition Comfort Zones, makes use of bold yellow lines to explore the confines the urban environment put individuals in and how societal norms shape the comfort zones they stay trapped in. This psychological journey will bring to light the workings behind the creation of predetermined “safe havens”.
Comfort Zones will run 23 August — 5 September 2020 at Coda Culture, 67 Aliwal Street, Singapore 199942. Open Mon-Fri 5pm-8pm, Sat 12pm-8pm, Sun 12pm-5pm.
Experience the Beauty of Peranakan Culture
Immerse yourself in their beautiful culture through the art of beading and the universal language of food at the Straits Enclave, a private event space in Joo Chiat that takes one back in time to an early-1900s Straits Chinese home. Under the expert guidance of Peranakan beading craftswoman Angeline Kong, learn traditional embroidery and stitching techniques to create your very own bookmark. Afterwards, step into the kitchen to make authentic Laksa and feast on Peranakan kueh for afternoon tea.
The Awesome Peranakan Experience – Bead by Bead workshop will be happening on 29 August 2020 from 10am-4pm at The Straits Enclave, 318 Joo Chiat Road, Singapore 427569. Tickets are available here at S$88 per person.
